Acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has warned Iran will pay "a very heavy price" for defying the world over its nuclear program.
Iran is no longer cooperating with the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and has barred snap inspections of its nuclear facilities.
Iran says it will start enriching uranium again in retaliation for being reported to the United Nations Security Council over its nuclear activities.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has dismissed his country's referral to the Security Council as a "funny decision".
He says Iran only wants to develop nuclear technology so it can generate electricity and he has described those opposed to Tehran as "idiots".
But Mr Olmert has accused Iran of secretly trying to develop the atomic bomb.
Speaking at the weekly Israeli Cabinet meeting, Mr Olmert warned Tehran that it would "pay a very heavy price" for its nuclear defiance and for resuming uranium enrichment.
As the row between Iran and the international community gathers pace, there has also been an unexpected twist.
Immediately after the United Nations' nuclear watchdog voted to report Iran to the Security Council, one of Iran's reactions was to say it was no longer necessarily favourable to Russia's offer to enrich uranium for it.
But just 24 hours later, Iran says that option is back on the table.
A spokesman for the Iranian Government says the country is still open to a proposal by Moscow that Iran shift its plan for large-scale enrichment of uranium to Russia.
Russia says it is hopeful Tehran will take up the offer and believes this would allay suspicions that Iran is developing a nuclear bomb.
Iran and Russia will meet next week to discuss the proposal.
Of course Israel will do whatever it needs to do. Shame on the rest of the world if we make Israel do our dirty work for us, AGAIN!
I fear that the only indicator that Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons is that Israel (and chunks of surrounding countries) hasn't been rendered a radioactive wasteland.
IAF plan turn Iran into nuclear parking lot????
"Shame on the rest of the world if we make Israel do our dirty work for us, AGAIN!"
That's why they call us the chosen people....chosen to bear a heavy burden.
Of course, this does not apply to the Condo cuties in South Florida, whose only burden is making it to the Rascal House in time for the early bird special.
