This part of Gaithersburg is only a mile from my office.

It's an upscale middleclass neighborhood...IOW...not an area that you'd expect to find an IED.

Boy, if I had my old calcium carbide cannon I could terrorize a large part of the country. On the other hand we did pretty well with calcium carbide in a coffee can.

One fire training officer I knew had a desk clock designed to look like a bomb. It was made from about five road flares wrapped with bands of electrical tape. There were a couple of wires up to one of those cheap LCD clocks you can buy at about a zillion stores. You had to examine it closely to tell what it was. I told him to get it out of his office. It had never occurred to him that someone walking by his office might see it and take it seriously.

One Halloween, I saw the police confiscate a guy's chain saw. This was in downtown Austin on 6th Street. Every Halloween, adults in costume have a Mardi Gras style party in the streets. He had taken the chain off, but every time he cranked it up, he darned near started a riot. People would panic and run away. After one guy ran into the street and almost got hit by a car, the cops took the chain saw and told him he could pick it up at police HQ the next morning.

Bottom line. Harmless things can look very scary.

That looks like something the "Palestinians" would give to their kids to play with.

This clock, available in some stores, looks pretty convincing. I think I'll pass:

3 hours and they still haven't figured out what it is. Given that it's a small package, to fit under the park bench, unless it's a CBW device, it can't be too much.

What's the speaker for? Does it play a message "I'm a bomb, 10 minutes and counting.... I'm a bomb, 9 minutes and counting... etc, etc"? Or maybe if someone tries to pick it up, or bumps it (as sensed by the mercury switch) it says "Don't touch me" or maybe "Boom!". :)

We used to blow match-head pipe "bombs" in the backyard ditch. Did you know that PVC turns into styrofoam? Those were the days...

You know, I have no idea. That clock is such a bad idea. A guy could get shot over it, I'm sure.

Well, it's clear that cutting the red wire would disable it, anyhow.

>the device had all the markings of an explosive device.< (from the story you linked)

The officials investigating the "device" have all the markings of idiots.

Now we're going to start misusing the term, IED. Every cherry bomb and M80 is going to be an "IED" and there will be a Breaking News Alert on Fox News. That should just about fill in the gaps between the car chases.

How is this going to affect the Natalee Holloway case? Or the cruise-ship investigation?

Then maybe I should have been arrested for what was my favoritr Halloween prank once I got too old to trick-or-treat.

I'd wait in the bushes with my Bag Full of Laughs (remember those?) and when people came by, I'd hit the button and the bag would emit its raucous laugh into the darkness.

You should have seen people scamper!
