One thing you gotta keep in mind about Flash Gordon's ray gun...
If Flash is on one side of a mountain with his ray gun and the other guy is on the other side with a mortar, Flash is gonna lose.

Execpt you forget the Flash has a laser that will shoot down the mortar, back calculate the point of origin, and either direct an airborne laser to take it out or fire GPS guided mortars to counter.
