US is developing a gunship that could literally obliterate enemy ground targets with a laser beam.

I'd be in favor of relaxing grooming restrictions so Marines could have beards and pony-tails. If that happened, then how would you be abke to tell the Marines from the Sailors?

That's the final scene to "Weird Science" where Val Kilmer uses the airborne laser he was tricked into developing to pop some popcorn in his academic advisor's house.

The laser would be faster and easier to aim, just aim straight without compensating for time to target.
The psychological value would be substantial. I believe the laser is in the infra red region. Beam is invisible, target will flash heat to several thousand degrees almost instantaneously. Personnel would just disappear in a flash of superheated steam. Results should be similar to being placed in a large, very high power microwave oven.

POPCORN!! its from the end scene of real genius after val kilmer has hacked the tracking system for the goverment laser weapon he invented, and pointed it at his professor's house, which he had loaded with a bunch of unpopped popcorn.

Good time to get into the business of anti-laser defense systems. Lasers are nice I guess. But like tracer rounds, they will always point two ways...

I have been involved with the military and weapons systems for many years. This new weapons system has my attention.

Same reason that Kamikaze pilots weren't that successful. All the good ones never made it through training.

The psychological value would be substantial. LOL. With a really big PA system screaming 'Allah is all kinds of pissed off at you people'.
