Lesbian Accuses Doctor's Office Of Giving Her Anti-Gay Literature
UPDATED: 7:16 am EST February 3, 2006
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 36-year-old lesbian has filed a state complaint against a doctor and physician's assistant alleging she was given literature condemning homosexuality as "sinful and sexually impure" after a routine appointment.
Jamie Beiler, formerly of Kissimmee, saw physician's assistant Dawn Pope-Wright on March 11, 2005, for a bronchitis checkup because her normal doctor was on vacation, according to a Jan. 27 complaint filed with the Division of Medical Quality Assurance. Beiler's sexuality was noted in her medical file, but unmentioned during the appointment, her lawyers said.
When she opened up an envelope Pope-Wright left at the checkout counter, she was shocked to find photocopied pages including Bible verses that denounced homosexuality and asserted God can help her change.
"The information that Ms. Pope-Wright gave to Ms. Beiler was derogatory and offensive, and completely disrespected her right to dignity and privacy," the complaint says.
Also named in the complaint is Dr. John R. Hartman, who allegedly deflected Beiler's concerns when she complained to the office.
Two telephone messages left at Hartman's office, one with an office manager, during business hours were not immediately returned. An office employee said Pope-Wright no longer worked there, and she couldn't be otherwise reached by The Associated Press.
Lawyers Karen Doering and Shelbi Day, who co-authored the complaint on Beiler's behalf, also filed a similar one with her insurer, Cigna HealthCare. The health care company also did not immediately comment.
Doering, senior counsel for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, said Pope-Wright was inappropriately using her job to distribute religious and political beliefs.
"It was just a routine follow-up visit," she said. "It had absolutely nothing to do with her sexual orientation."
Wow. Pretty damned thin-skinned, that's all I can say. If you're really that sure of yourself, why not just laugh it off and toss the pamphlet in the trash and buy your partner a new pair of edibles to celebrate with.
This is not good: from the evidence to hand, it took this woman almost a year to recognize what had happened.
We really need better education for lesbians in this country. I wonder if they get as bad treatment in the classroom as boys?
Freedom of speech is OK when they shove their gay messages down out throats.
"No sir, your honor it was just carpet cleaning instructions."
If they had noticed that she had, say, a growth that she did not know was a problem - should they keep their mouths shut about it?
They were concerned about her well-being, informed her of the possibly fatal nature of her malady and offered a remedy (Jesus being the bondage-breaker and miracle-maker).
She could choose to ignore that if she wants to - but as compassionate human beings they have a responsibility to tell her.
Shoot, that's nothing. My doctor stuck his finger up my butt.
They now think this is illegal or immoral?
Tell that to nations college professors.
Besides, it's not nice to fool Mother Nature.
One of them can, the other is the "suicide king"?
So the next time a public school hands out pro-gay material, can we sue?
I notice that they aren't challenging the accuracy of the information.
Is this supposed to be satire?
The Pope has spoken.
"inappropriately using her job to distribute religious and political beliefs"Excellent point. Now how do we get the word out? One place to start: Anybody here have any friends on the staff of frontpagemag?
They now think this is illegal or immoral?
Tell that to nations college professors.
>> Pope-Wright <<
I'm guessing she agrees with Benedict XVI on homosexuality?
Excellent.
This doctor tries to help out this womyn by giving her some spiritual direction along with some information that details the destructive lifestyle that she is involved in, and she is offended?
The truth hurts, sweetheart, get over it.
Just one? You got off easy!
