"the apocalypse" as I understand it is the final battle between good and evil.

Good knows it is good and evil knows it is evil in this battle case of muslims vs christians (now 5,000 years old) both side believe they are good. They believe each other is evil so, one is lying to the other or lying to themselves or, this cannot be the apocalypse.

It could however be one heck of a battle.

He is said to have gone into "occlusion" in the 9th century, at the age of five.

Orthodontics and flossing would take care of him...

I pray, I really do, that W does not turn out to be his father's true son and choke in the clutch.

I think W has more of his mother in him.

The way I understood it is that Ahmadinejad is, as you said, aware that the conditions are ripe for the mahdi's return, however, he also believes he could "speed things up a bit" by igniting a conflict like the one we're headed for.

The first time I heard/read that I thought "interesting", the second time I thought "maybe" and then I heard it again and again and I started to doubt it more and more. Unless someone can produce some Twelver texts actually saying that, I'm going to consider it as a misunderstanding by the reporters and/or scholars, perhaps combined with people watching too many James Bond movie villains.

I've simply seen way too much Muslim literature that the "evidence is all around us" that these are the Last Days and that the Dajjal either is the West itself, or that the West is prepping to be Dajjal's base of operations any minute now. I don't see where they would see any need to "speed things up."

I admit my suspicions could be wrong on that. But until they give me some actual Twelver statement, I'm not going to believe it.

As an analogy: remember when the earliest news reports about Waco told us that "David Koresh believes he is Jesus Christ" and that it was much later when the alternative news explained that David Koresh believed he was a "messiah" in the sense of an "anointed leader" like King David? That's how my ear is "tingling" when de Borchgrave or somebody tells me what Ahmadinejad believes (independently of his own words). It may be close, but not quite on target.

IMHO, Ahmadinejad is out there running around in broad daylight and his location often known. He's been lucky so far. I hope it wont last.

Perhaps my most optimistic hope about Ahmadinejad is this: That his "Mahdi" talk is just bluster for the crowds. That deep down, he's a Muslim engineer who wants his nation to have the Bomb so that it can wield influence, and that his "Mahdi" road & building campaign is a FDR-esque make-work program to reduce unemployment. In which case, even if he gets the Bomb, he might act under MADD while talking "Mahdi" rant. Unfortunately, I suspect there's little chance of this, and that he really is an apocalyptist.

My gut tells me that is the answer...he is a real Twelver.

From the article ...

President Bush says all options are on the table. But the military option is probably the one the "twelvers" would look forward to. Some Washington think tank strategists argue if Iran's Dr. Strangelove attacked Israel with a nuclear weapon, five Iranian cities would be vaporized next day.

It might behoove the United States to sit down with "axis of evil" Iran to find out if the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) doctrine that kept the Soviet Union and the U.S. at peace for a half-century could still be made to work.

In any event, one would have to be irredeemably myopic not to see that Iran has an active nuclear weapons program. The only question is how far this secret program is from delivering a usable weapon and fitting it in the nose cone of a Shahab-3 missile with the range to reach Israel. The Israeli Air Force will be "overhead" Iran long before.

12th imam's

Can't hold a candle to the 12th man. The Corps may not be amused. And they have been known to set off with Artillery to amuse themselves.

More like the next hour or less. Possibly more than 5 cities too. Unless the Israelis were saving assets for its nearer neighbors, who would likely try to take advantage of the situation.

Complicating the situation for any would be attacker is that Israel also has Arrow anti-IRBM missiles. They've been tested and they work. So the Iranian wild man could launch his attack, have all of his birds blown out of near space before they get close to their targets, and then suffer their slice of the Samson Option. All pain no gain. But still not likely to defer someone trying to bring on the 12th Iman.

I bet he is a frustrated artist who was kicked out of art school and then went off to fight a war, came back as a corporal in the Iranian army and then decided to get into politics...he just rose to power faster because he wasn't drinking beer...

Actually he was one of the leaders of the "students" who took American diplomats hostage in an act of war that was met with little more than hand wringing by Mr. Peanut, and which only ended the day the "Cowboy" took the oath of office as President. Well there appears to be another Cowboy in the White house, and El Presidente de Iran had best take account of that. That was well before the Iran Iraq war, which is the last signifigent fighting Iranian forces have been involved in. You can bet he didn't go to the front in that war later either.
