I agree Swann has no chance. As usual, the Republican elite in Pennsylvania are morons. A guy with no experience in government, not even as justice of the peace, thinks he's going to be governor? What are Republicans smoking? So, it's four more years of Fast Eddie and higher taxes.
I dunno. While I don't think Swann's a shoo in, consider this:
Swann will pick up at least ten points more in Western PA just due to the Steelers connection.
He'll pick up at least a few percent higher of the Black vote than a typical white, unknown Republican.
Could make the difference. We'll see.
And who would you put up as a viable candidate against Fast Eddie's well-oiled corruption machine? One who has charisma, name recognition, and a prayer of peeling away some African-american votes to offset the Philly fraud?
Did Arnold have experience before being elected in CA?
"A guy with no experience in government, not even as justice of the peace, thinks he's going to be governor?"
Tell it to Jesse "the mind" Ventura.
He's been "listening" for a year and a half while trying to decide whether or not to run. In that time, other than the occasional "I'm a conservative" soundbite, he has not developed an actual program or initiative that would give credence to his claims.
Two words: Jesse Ventura.
That said, I agree with you on the no-experience thing, and have said that many times about Swann on this forum, in different threads.
THAT said...I think he will come very close, and might even win.
Ronald Reagan held no elective office before being Gov. of the nation's largest state.
I remember a guy back in the 60's with no experience in government and who had, according to the "pundits" no chance to win. He not only won but became president in 1980. Also, how much governing experience did George W.have before he became governor in Texas? Experience is overrated. What you need is the ability to surround yourself with good people and delegate. Rendell had alot of experience but, in my opinion, he's been a disaster. I don't know if Swann can win or not but he's sure going to get my vote in November.
Hillary! became a Senator of a state she didn't even live in.
Ya. What a stupid idea. Only professional politicians need apply. < / sarcasm >
They are thinking he's got name recognition, money to finance his race, ability to retain traditional Rep voters, and possibility to take the usual Dem voters in unions/minority demos.
In otherwords, they are thinking he's got the skills and assets to win this race, and they are correct. Ask the current Governor of penn if he agrees with your statements about Swann's chances. he's so scared he announced support for Alito!
"Experience in government" is vastly overstated as a necessary qualification these days. Name recognition is far more important. Recent history is replete with people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hillary Clinton that had no real experience before getting elected to high positions.
"A guy with no experience in government."
Neither did California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Swann is going to win. He will win because Philadelphians who are black are going to vote for a black former superbowl winning football player over a white guy. Period.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Swann is definitely the best candidate in the primary field.
Plus Rendell is going to be dogged by the slots issue, it's in the papers again today.
Ummm, Caleeforrnia grass, maybe?
