Bush Immigration Policy Disappoints Conservatives

Two years ago, Border Patrol agents began to voice what many believed were legitimate concerns about "armed incursions" into the United States from Mexico-based assailants. Now these invasions occur routinely putting federal agents' and law enforcement officers' lives in jeopardy.

They reported that heavily armed Mexican army units and federal police, called federales, had infiltrated US territory and fired upon them, in some cases because – federal agents would later discover – Mexican drug lords had put prices on the heads of American law-enforcement agents strung out along the border. Where was the outrage by our political leaders and the mainstream media over this blatant violation of our national sovereignty?

Many of our political leaders and most in the news media ignore these violent attacks on our national sovereignty while more and more Americans are saying, "This has got to stop!"

While tens of millions of Americans watched and listened to President George Bush's much anticipated State of the Union speech, many were disappointed at the lack of emphasis on the biggest threat to national security today: unmitigated illegal immigration and porous US borders.

President Bush continues to maintain a contradictory and perilous position regarding illegal immigration, claiming his plan does not amount to amnesty. Standard American language usage contravenes the President’s specious explanation in that his plan clearly overlooks the offense of illegal aliens who entered this country in violation of law and would not seek prosecution; a full amnesty within contextual and explicit meaning.

The current position of the Administration on illegal immigration is demonstrative of a flawed public and enforcement policy which undermines national security by encouraging future mass illegal immigration. Additionally, the intention of the President sends contradictory signals to agencies tasked with securing our borders as well as police commanders across the nation.

In a recent The Washington Times article in which the President attempted to justify his position on illegal immigration, the President stated the current immigration situation is a “bureaucratic nightmare” and the Border Patrol is “overstressed” due to “people [illegal immigrants] streaming across [the border].”

Further evidence of the Administration’s contradictory position on illegal immigration are statements made by political appointees charged with protecting the public. In September of 2004, in an effort to build support for the Administration’s Amnesty proposal, Asa Hutchinson, former Homeland Security Undersecretary, publicly stated it is “not realistic” to arrest or deport illegal aliens already in the country.

More recently, budget problems within the Department of Homeland Security further called into question the priorities of the Administration as agents are forced to release illegal aliens and curtail operations due to ongoing financial constraints. These circumstances all contribute to a “bureaucratic nightmare” and “overstressed” Border Patrol.

The position of the Administration on illegal immigration has had a profound and negative effect not only on law enforcement operations, but also border patrol agent morale. The impact on agent morale was measured in a survey conducted by independent Hart Research Associates during the summer of 2004.

The survey found a majority of agents were demoralized and were not getting the full support needed to protect the country, clearly indicating a conflict between the view of professional field agents and the Administration in regard to national domestic security. The Administration’s current immigration plans will exacerbate, not alleviate, that problem.

For those tuning in to hear President Bush address the problems faced as a result of rampant illegal immigration and Mexican military incursions, the speech was a major disappointment.

the President stated the current immigration situation is a “bureaucratic nightmare” and the Border Patrol is “overstressed” due to “people [illegal immigrants] streaming across [the border].”
The ONLY “bureaucratic nightmare” is his consistent determination to eliminate our southern border while looking like he cares about it to his core constituents.
While I do believe he is a good man in general, he is an ardent globalist with little or no regard for or national sovereignty.
The very basic function of the federal government is to protect us from invasion - something his administration absolutely refuses to do.

Just received a phone call from the RNC, asking for an emergency donation of $150.

Although it pained me to say it...can you guess what I told them?

Bush can't figure it out. He should just shut his mouth about immigration. It is doing him more harm then good.

I don't know if there is anyway to compile the statistics but if you were to do an analysis of the discussion here at Free Republic about his SOTU speech my guess is that you would find that about 80% of it focused on his immigration policies and about 80% of the posters in those threads were negative about what he had to say. We are his base and most of us are bashing him for his immigration policy(deservedly in my opinion) rather than supporting him for the 95% of his SOTU speech that was pretty good.

By now, he should know he is going to get that reaction. He is his own worst enemy. By shafting us on that one issue he gets an angry base that is not inclined to support him on anything.

What can anyone say? President Bush has earned an A+ in the War on Terror, but an F- in immigration.

Probably because without secure borders EVERYTHING else is a side issue.

We are being prepped for the big news that is coming within 10 years - the Canadian and Mexican borders are soon to be gone and we will be one country - North America.

Bush and Bush Sr. are globalist through and through. Do you remember the Bush Sr. speech to Congress immediately following the victory in Iraq during the Gulf War? Do you remember the mantra - the victors represented the New World Order. This victory is heralding the age of the New World Order. It was &%cking blasphemous.

GW is purposely NOT DOING ANYTHING about the illegal immigration problem. He's got his marching orders and he's not going to do anything to truely deter illegal immigration and interrupt the course of the New World Order.

All you TRUE AMERICANS had better learn to shutup and comply with the New World Order, or else.....

Just received a phone call from the RNC, asking for an emergency donation of $150.

So did I. We must be on the same phone list. I told them I realize it takes money to develop a globalist, one-world, open-border utopia filled with ruling elites and poverty-stricken wage slaves to service them.

I also told them I was already doing my part, paying for "free" health care for illegals -- excuse me, undocumented guest workers doing the jobs Amercans don't want to do -- in California with my tax dollars.

I gave at the office.

The problem with our border security and immigration policy in the US is that we haven't had one for over 30 years. And, there is nobody in a position of power in Washington who gives a damn enough to do anything.

We are essentially being invaded by Mexican military personnel on the payroll of the drug lords and we do NOTHING. I just don't understand why the US military is not patrolling the border. They are shooting at us!! I had two friends that were full-time Catholic missionaries in Allende Mexico which is about 45 minutes South of Eagle Pass, TX. I was more scared for their safety as I was for my soldier friends in Iraq. At least in Iraq, the soldiers can kill anybody that shoots at them. In Texas, the border agents are essentially sitting ducks.

The average poor Mexican would not cross the border and challenge the military. Only the druggies and bad guys would take us on. At least that would finally put us head-to-head with the bad guys.

I am currently reading Tom Clancy's book "Clear and Present Danger". The cool part of this book is that the President finally had the manhood to attack the bad guys coming into the US. Clancy was way ahead of his time in his analysis of the border situation. In the book, a US fighter jet patrolled the border and shot down the druggies.

If we want to say we are at war with Drugs and Terror. We should at least defend ourselves from these attackers at our most vulnerable place.

Why does this seem so obvious? If the bad guys are coming in there - we have to go there to stop them!

Sad, isn't it.

Yep, I want to cry.

Oh, but all of that illegal help is providing some employers with huge profit margins, and our economy is booming. And yet the president doesn't see the damage being done to the country in so many areas.

I didn't see the Tuesday night address, but I understand that it could have been given by the late Nelson A. Rockefeller as far as the content. Is that correct?
