Conservatives Disappointed with Bush 'State of the Union' Speech
The National Ledger ^ | 2-2-06 | Robert Novak

WASHINGTON -- While jumping up on cue to cheer during the speech and delivering rave reviews afterward in the Capitol's Statuary Hall, conservative members of Congress were deeply disappointed by George W. Bush Tuesday night. It was not merely that the president abandoned past domestic goals. He appeared to be moving toward bigger government.

The consensus on the Right was that President Bush's fifth State of the Union Address was his worst. Republican congressmen agreed privately that he was most effective at the beginning with his familiar message of why U.S. forces cannot abandon Iraq. The problem for these lawmakers was the rest of the 51-minute presentation, which was filled with unpleasant surprises.

You're right. We're failures.

First time we have ever agreed.

Can't seem to get this border closed, or our immigration laws enforced.

Better get Alan elected, huh?

Reagan was successful in getting his economic recovery plan, tax reform, defense buildup and reductions in the welfare state, along with discretionary spending cuts enacted in his first term. Unlike Bush, Reagan did this with a Democrat controlled House and a tough liberal Speaker named Tip O'Neill running the show. Reagan's second term was highlighted by serious bilateral reductions in strategic nuclear weapons of both the US and the USSR. Reagan made the world a safer place for everyone. Reagan also found time to win the Cold War, dismantle the USSR, vanquish Euro-communism and free 500 million people from the once powerful totalitarian regimes of the Eastern Bloc. Reagan made pro-life issues a mainstay of his eight years as POTUS. His court nominees were for the most part highly conservative picks. Reagan signing of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 didn't turn out the way it was suppose to, but its still on the books, waiting for Bush to enforce it.

And lets not forget, Reagan's two historical landslide election victories. Not a perfect record, but a great legacy nonetheless.

You don't believe me? TOUGH!

I don't do links ( and explained exactly WHY !), but I have an exceedingly good memory. I also NEVER make things up, just to say something.

If you want a "war", go off and play with yourself. If you'd REALLY like to disprove me, go look at the old Cal. gov, race threads and show me up. I double dog dare you! :^)

You don't believe me? TOUGH!

Tough for you. I hear you on your inability to cite an earlier appearance of "Donner Party". Too bad. it'd be fun to have corroboration for your memory.

If you want a "war", go off and play with yourself.

I'd rather get a war going by setting you off on some rants.

Hiya, a great speech last night.

What the folks don't realize Bush has many subjects
and a short time to get them in. Sure, he could give a
3 hr. speech and give more details about his policies
but how many would hang around till midnight.
Lets get real folks, do all want more democrats in
congress in 06 and Hilary Clintoon in 08, just keep
bashing Bush or anyone who is only 99% conservative.
