Serving the best troops in the world - welcome to the FR Canteen!
Welcome to all who support our troops!

Super Bowl XL

VS.

Who do you like in the big game? Most “experts” are picking the Steelers, though most every fan has an opinion. Since I’m a Viking fan, I’m spending my 29th consecutive Super Sunday watching commercials and hoping for the return of “Terry Tate: Office Linebacker”. (Warning…R-rated. Contains some grown-up language!)

But for those of us who have a dog in the fight, one of the best parts of the game has nothing to do with the game itself – the quotes. Time for a stroll down memory lane and a look at some of the greatest quotes from Super Bowls gone by…

Super Bowl I

"I don't think Kansas City compares with the best teams in the NFL. Dallas is a better team. There. That's what you wanted me to say, isn't it?"

--Vince Lombardi, after winning the first AFL/NFL Championship Game. The NFL Championship trophy now bears his name.

Super Bowl I

"Hey, Norm, isn't he one of ours?"

--Packers quarterback Bart Starr, to Super Bowl I referee Norm Schachter, when he learned that one of the three NFL officials (working with three AFL officials) had called a penalty on Green Bay.

Super Bowl III

"We're going to win Sunday. I guarantee you."

-- Joe Namath, New York Jets quarterback, making one of the most famous predictions in sports history. His Jets upset the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16-7, helping to make the name of the AFL.

Super Bowl XI

“A stick of gum would have been enough.”

--Oakland Raiders wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff, one of the best possession receivers to ever play, after being awarded the MVP trophy in Super Bowl XI. Since his Raiders beat my Vikings, a stick of gum would have been not only enough, but preferable in my book!

Super Bowl XIII

"Terry Bradshaw couldn't spell 'cat' if you spotted him the 'C' and the 'A.'"

--Dallas linebacker Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson trying to get under Bradshaw’s skin. It didn’t work. The Steelers won 35-31 and Bradshaw learned to spell M-V-P.

Super Bowl XVIII

“I’d run over my own mother to win it.”

--Washington Redskins guard Russ Grimm, before the game.

“I’d run over Grimm’s mother, too.”

--Raiders linebacker Matt Millen, whose Raiders ran over Grimm’s Redskins by a 38-9 score. Now in football management, Millen has found running over teams to be much more difficult ever since.

Super Bowl XXII

“How long have you been a black quarterback?”

-- Question supposedly asked to Doug Williams, Washington quarterback, before the game against the Broncos. No one has ever verified the quote or who said it, but Williams set a Super Bowl record with 340 yards passing and four scores in Washington’s 42-10 win.

Super Bowl XXIII

“We got ‘em now!”

-- A teammate, to Cincinnati wide receiver Cris Collinsworth, after Jim Breech’s field goal gave the Bengals a 16-13 lead with 3:10 to play.

“Don’t you see who their quarterback is?”

-- Collinsworth to his teammate regarding Joe Montana, who then drove the 49ers to a 20-16 win in what some believe was the greatest Super Bowl ever played.

Super Bowl XXIV

“Defensively, I think it’s important for us to tackle.”

-- Denver Broncos defensive tackle Karl Mecklenburg before the big game. Unfortunately for the Broncos, Montana’s 49ers then put up the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history, a 55-10 drubbing that saw Montana throw for five scores.

Non-Super quotes

Not all football quotes, even those with Super connections, center on the big game …

“The shoulder surgery was a success. The lobotomy failed.”

-- Bears coach Mike Ditka at right, revealing his wishes for quarterback Jim McMahon, he of headband fame.

“Football is like life -- it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.”

-- Coach Lombardi, as pictured above.

“Football is a mistake. It combines two of the worst things about American life. It is violence punctuated by committee meetings.”

-- Conservative commentator and noted baseball fan George Will. Hey, how did he get in here?

“In life, as in a football game, the principle to follow is: Hit the line hard.”

-- Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. Words to live by!
