LA immigrant advocates denounce Bush's guest worker proposal

Los Angeles -- Leaders of immigrant advocacy groups Wednesday denounced President Bush's brief mention of a guest worker program during his State of the Union address, saying it would separate families and is unrealistic.

Two former workers of the Bracero Program — the U.S. guest worker system with Mexico from 1942 to 1964 — also said no new program should be started until all former guest workers collect unpaid retirement funds.

Bush devoted less than 100 words to immigration out of a 50-minute speech Tuesday night, but it was enough to rankle immigrant advocates.

About a dozen advocates gathered to criticize Bush's proposal at La Placita, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the city, in front of a large mural of the Virgin de Guadalupe. The church has declared itself a sanctuary for all immigrants.

Of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, very few would come forward to enroll in a temporary program that could lead to their deportation, said Angela Sanbrano, executive director of the Central American Resource Center.

"His program is not realistic and it does not reflect the values of the American people," Sanbrano said. "It would lead to the separation of families."

The advocates called for immigration reform that would provide permanent residency for immigrants already in the United States and a path for eventual U.S. citizenship.

"...also said no new program should be started until all former guest workers collect unpaid retirement funds."

These people are worse than the welfare class. They get steal our health care, steal our jobs, and take billions of dollars out of our economy and now they want us to pay their retirement? I am just a bit rankled.

The retirement funds were given to the Mexican government that promptly stole the money.

I don't have anything nice....or even neutral to say about this.

And I'd be more than happy to tell the Catholic Church where and how they can shove their "sanctuary for all immigrants".

I guess you will have to wait for a long time until the Bushbots and OBLers respond to this.

When you give folks Amnesty or "Guest Worker" status you will either be paying them Social Security directly or pay the Government of Mexico directly for their entitlements.

What the Bushbots never defend is Bush's policy of direct Social Security payments to the Government of Mexico which is being negotiated as we speak.

I hope the OBL ers and Bushbots have big enough corporate profits for SS taxes and Medicare taxes and general fund taxes to cover the 35 Million illegals and their health, schooling, imprisonment costs.

Somehow the adjective "illegal" was omitted in the headline before "Immigrant."

Surely an innocent oversight.

These people were innocent Mexican farm workers so I like what these people have to say. I would build a fence tomorrow if I could but I would also allow 1.5 million guest workers strictly for agriculture and food processing. We don't want want our farmers to go under due to Mexican and foreign competition

Bracero program was so modest compared to the full blown invasion we have today

I would support a guest worker program that limits the number of alien workers, the jobs they are allowed to persue, and the amount of money they are allowed to take out of the country. If they want to work here, and there are many jobs that they can fill, that's fine. Do it legally, get paid well, and pay your dues for the opportunity. I would also be in favor of a guest worker tax that could directly fund increased security at our border. To be honest, there is a win/win in this whole immigration debacle if those blowhards in D.C. would just stop whining and start doing constructive things.

It's a simple fact that the last 150 years of our country's history is dominated by immigration. We are the diverse, well respected, and great nation we are today in large part due to contributions of immigrants. But most of them were legal immigrants who STAYED here, built businesses, and contributed to the economy and society in general. Not lurking theives that come into our society with the only intention of taking advantage of it then slinking back to their homes in another country.

Theives need to be treated as such, and illegal aliens are just that. They make no positive contribution to our economy, or our society. They take their untaxed income and spend most of it in their country, not ours. They steal our healthcare, and in many cases our welfare. They are a cancer on our society that needs to be dealt with properly, not with the kid gloves that are being used now.

Excuse me? I read "guest worker" and I'd like to ask that the very first "guest worker" that these people can provide will help their odd arguement.

I see a lot of illegal aliens who are "workers" - none of whom are "guests" given that they are present in the country but were not invited and certainly are not remaining here by voluntary hospitality. Nope, just see illegal aliens who never asked permission to enter the country, entered anyway, remained by force of obstinance, were never asked to.

Nope, no "guest workers" anywhere in CA. Just illegal aliens.

*PING!*

Hmm...calling all OBL/Bushbot IDIOTS!

We TOLD YOU SO...and here it comes from the very people who would have to COMPLY with the damn "Shamnesty"!

"His program is not realistic and it does not reflect the values of the American people," Sanbrano said. "It would lead to the separation of families."

I agree it's "unrealistic", but a PROPER understanding/interperetation of the 14th Amendment would eliminate this problem, as your chilluns would be DEPORTED too!

The advocates called for immigration reform that would provide permanent residency for immigrants already in the United States and a path for eventual U.S. citizenship.

Then we strip these "Advocates" of U.S. Citizenship and DEPORT their a$$es to with their constituency!

If THIS isn't proof that Jorge Arbusto's INSANE "Shamnesty" will NEVER work as he "plans", and that all it will do is guarantee that 11+ MILLION Illegal Infiltrators (More like 30!!!!) will be given the gift that keeps on giving; a key to Uncle Sucker's Bank Vault, then I have only ONE thing to say to all you Kool-Aid drinkers...

For once I agree with them. No guests, all illegals out now. No further pay or jobs or whatever. No funds sent "home" either.

"...a guest worker tax that could directly fund increased security at our border."

A reasonable request. Thing is, these guest worker payrolls could be taxed at 60% and it wouldn't begin to cover the education and health care costs for the worker and their families they will be allowed to bring.

Hey, I didn't say how much to tax. I'd say tax them the amount that it costs to have them here. If that's 80% so be it. They'd still probably make more than they would illegally.
