Answer the question . . . under what formal agreement does the U.S. have any obligation to rise to Israel's defense against Iran?

Without such an agreement in place, Israel doesn't even qualify as an "ally" of the United States from a diplomatic standpoint.

And "President Bush thinks it's a good idea" does not mean the U.S. has any obligation to defend Israel, either.
