Where there's smoke, there might be food research, too
Chicago Tribune ^ | 1/29/06 | Patricia Callahan, Jeremy Manier and Delroy Alexander

America's largest foodmaker and its biggest cigarette company for years have likened themselves to distant siblings, giants that just happened to be owned by the same parent company.

In fact, Kraft Foods Inc. and Philip Morris USA have pooled expertise in search of making more-alluring foods and cigarettes since the dawn of their corporate pairing two decades ago, a Tribune examination of tobacco-lawsuit documents has found.

Documents show Northfield-based Kraft collaborated on flavor issues with some of the same Philip Morris brain researchers who probed what gives cigarettes their kick. None of those scientists was more controversial than Frank Gullotta, a former top Philip Morris researcher whose brain experiments suggested the company knew more than it claimed about cigarettes' addictive nature.

The documents also reveal that Kraft and Philip Morris discussed investing jointly in brain scans to study how the brain processes tastes and smells. Food scientists even helped their tobacco counterparts make experimental cigarettes--working after-hours in a German coffee plant.

So now they want to prevent Kraft from cutting the cheese?

Oops, lets rephrase that. Can we ban fat people from restaurants to prevent them from hurting themselves?

I hope the smoking Nazi's are all fat disgusting pigs that I will be able to yell out to and say get back in your house you fat disgusting pig, we don't want you around our children!

Don't worry, you won't be fat forever, we'll make sure you can't afford it. Don't get mad, we have your best interests at heart.

/sarcastic rant over :P

I use the unlit cigarette in the hand or mouth ploy to clear the fat chicks out of the candy aisle at the grocery store.

That's hysterical! ROTFLMAO!

I personally despise Philip Morris for selling out it's customer base to big government nannies

I know what you are saying but i think after brown & williamson tobacco pulled a smith and wesson philip morris saw the writing on the wall and just gave up.They knew they didnt have a chance in hell of being victorious against the full force of the (clinton) government I deeply despise brown and williamson more then philip morris

Why, thank you! And true, too.

Half the fun is watching 'em scatter. Looks like a whole parade of pairs of bulldogs fighting to get out of feed sacks.

I'm not sure I understand your references to Brown & Williamson.

Philip Morris practically singlehandedly wrote the Master Settlement Agreement and forced the other companies to go along. They are now having laws enacted all over the country to force the non-participating manufacturers, including many that were not even in existence when the MSA was enacted, to comply with it.

Brown & Williamson was the first tobacco company to turn over all thier documents and cooperate fully with the state governemts and thefeds hoping toget on thier good side and not be slammed as much as the other companys in the settlement it didnt work of course and they ended up going bankrupt a few years later if i rember correctly

Thanks..........I had forgotten about the document hand over.

If I remember my "takeovers" correctly, I believe B&W is now part of British American Tobacco.

I do not knowingly purchase any tobacco products from any of the "big boys" and haven't for quite some time. And I make that perfectly clear to friedns who work for them.

And the crickets will continue to chirp.

yes they will until the obese are led away at gunpoint to the fat farms where they will scream bloody murder about how they have the right to eat what they want and eat where they want.Meanwhile I will stand 25 feet and 1 inch away from the front gates and light up a unfiltered lucky strike or camel giving them the finger while they are doing their forced runs and calisthenics and i stopped smoking when i was 28 but ill start up again for special circumstances like that

Oh, no. We have 'em by the ton around here. Late-teens, early-twenties, stair-step kids, 300 lbs.

Buying 2-lb. bags of candy and pork skins with the EBT cards.

No need to start smoking again..........just hold an unlit one within the 25 feet.........it will drive the nannies NUTS!!!!!

have you gotten a good look at some of the prominent anti-smokers out there? The vast majority could stand to lose 25, if not 50, pounds. And then there is the one that is also a major proponent of gay adoption.....he claims he and his "partner" are better parents to their "adopted daughters" than my husband and I are to our biological daughter, based solely on the fact we smoke and they don't.

heeheehee!!!!

Joe Cherner is a slimy piece of work, IMO.........he is also a proven liar. In a letter to the editor of a Delaware Newspaper supporting the smoking ban, his location was listed as Wilmington (DE's largest city)........in actuality he was living in France at the time, because their home in NYC was in the danger zone of Ground Zero following 9/11/01.

"Maybe just maybe when they go after food the small government conservatives in this website that are all for smoking ban s will get outraged enough to try to put a stop to the nanny state."

There is no such thing as a small government conservative that is supportive of a smoking ban.
