I think Buchanan makes some telling points here. Some of you are unjustly calling him antisemitic. Nothing could be further from the truth. Hamas is no longer a fringe group. It is now in the drivers seat. It has political power.I think we should give them some time and see if they show any sign of changing their ways. Hamas should be required to recognize and pledge to the world to respect the territorial integrity of Israel. In return Israel should withdraw from all settlements on the West Bank. The settlements have been the chief stumbling block that prevents any kind of agreement.Israel has not ever offered to withdraw these settlements. They were illegal in the first place. On this issue alone if Israel agrees, peace may be achievable. The Palestinians are entitled to a country of their own. If Hamas fails to respond then of course the status quo will remain.By refusing to negotiate under honorable circumstance we would be hypocrites since we negotiate with Russians, the Chinese, Libya etc. all of our formerly sworn enemies. Take note the right wing in Israel is perfectly happy with Hamas. It gives them an excuse not to negotiate.

Actually, Buchanan has a history of defending Nazis, Holocaust revisionism, and use of conspiracy theories about Jewish and neocon influence.
Whatever true point he makes is already besmirched by its author.

amas is no longer a fringe group. It is now in the drivers seat. It has political power.I think we should give them some time and see if they show any sign of changing their ways. Hamas should be required to recognize and pledge to the world to respect the territorial integrity of Israel.
Hamas has already made it clear that it will not do so. Have you not been paying attention to statements by Hamas members?

In return Israel should withdraw from all settlements on the West Bank.
What is a settlement? Does this include Jerusalem? Does it include land owned by Jews prior to the Arab invasions of 1948?

The settlements have been the chief stumbling block that prevents any kind of agreement.Israel has not ever offered to withdraw these settlements. They were illegal in the first place.
There is nothing illegal about building communities on disputed land.
Israel offered to withdraw from most of the land multiple times under Rabin, Peres, and Barak. The PLO responded with terror and Hamas never stopped.

The Palestinians are entitled to a country of their own.
Jordan is an Arab state on 3/4 of Palestine.

Take note the right wing in Israel is perfectly happy with Hamas. It gives them an excuse not to negotiate.
Quite teh opposite. The Hamas victory is exactly what Israeli conservatives warned of.

>>>>>>I think Buchanan makes some telling points here.

Yes, he does. Buchanan isn't advocating new aid for Hamas, he's saying we shouldn't cut off the aid we already committed to giving to the Palestinian Authority. If you do that, we look like hypocrites, advocating democracy except when we don't like the results. Now, I happen to believe that we shouldn't be in the democrary-exporting business in the first place, but if you've made that the rationale for America's actions in the Mideast, cutting off aid to Hamas becuase we disapprove of them certainly helps undermine that effort.

"Take note the right wing in Israel is perfectly happy with Hamas. It gives them an excuse not to negotiate."

Would you negotiate with an organized death cult street gang in your neighbourhood having repeatedly murdered members of your own family and stated publicly their goal is to exterminate your entire family, and all your friends - simply because you are Jewish?

The hero of Hamas, Amin Al Husseini

The modern day Islamic-Nazis in the tradition of Amin Al Husseini

Soon, Israel, America, England, Australia and other key Allies shall repay the bank-rollers and arms merchants of Hamas & other jihadist gangs, Iran and Syria. Whose side are you going to be on?

I'm afraid they won't shred their Hamas Charter.
Because it outlines Hama's "reason for being".

And at the same time, I hope I'm proved wrong and things make
peaceful progress.
