For the life of me I can't think of any reason to tell the kid to stand up other than to shoot him.
I mean what sort of police procedure has you telling a suspect to get up off the ground where he is prone?
Survived Iraq, came home to be shot by a cop for no reason. I am without words.
If the reported description of audio and video is accurate, sounds like attempted murder.
I saw it. The deputy should be shot. This was attempted murder. For anyone who thinks that police are always right, take a look at the video. You will be enlightened.
The conversation is a little garbled as the reporter isn't keeping his mouth shut, so you can hear what is being said, but you clearly hear the soldier being told to get up and the soldier indicating he is getting up...and then 4 shots fired.
The homicide unit is investigating...
the video is unreal. but you see this type of thing on other police video - they seem to want to play "twister" with people at traffic stops. hands on your head, hands down, sit down, stand up, lie down. you just don't know what to do, and this cop blew this kid away.
Watch it yourself. There is a link to the video on the MSNBC website. It's grainy but you can see the kid on the ground, and hear the kid telling the cop, "I am unarmed we are on the same side." After which the cop tell's him to stand up. They kid tells the cop he is going to stand up, and as soon as he rises the cop shoots him. Good thing this cop is a poor shot or the kid's guardian angel is working overtime.
Yeah - this is a BAD shoot. No excuse for it.
Anyone who reads these police threads knows that I am definitely pro-cop. That said, if this story is correct, the Deputy needs to be fired and arrested.
Interesting how you can come to this conclusion with so little evidence. Attempted murder means the deputy planned this in advance. I guess he could have been sitting at the side of the road thinking "the next Corvette that comes by at 100mph I'm going to chase it down and shoot the passenger".
You can here him saying "I'm military... I'm on your side"
I saw it too. They didn't mention a 100mph chase.
Listening to this guy moan is excruciatingly painful.
As far as I'm concerned, he should end up owning half of LA over this.
The cop should be drawn and quartered.
"To protect and serve" my azz!
It was one of the most chilling videos I have ever seen. I'd place it up there with the Nick Berg video for its sheer shock effect.
That deputy should be thrown in the darkest, deepest cell we have.
Since when does attempted murder require premeditation? Maybe your thinking of first degree murder, which only requires about 10 seconds to become premeditated.
I'm very pro cop too. If there wasn't video of this, I'd be sympathetic to the fast choices cops often have to make.
who was the voice in the background saying "you just told him to get up" after the shots?
It would be helpful to hear the whole dialog. Reporters talked over the important verbal exchanges prior to the shooting.
