Florida Rep.'s Wife Says She Was Ejected From State Of Union
AP ^ | 2/1/06 | Staff

The wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Indian Shores, told a newspaper that she was ejected during the State of the Union address for wearing a T-shirt that says, "Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom."

Beverly Young told the St. Petersburg Times that she was sitting in the front row of the House gallery Tuesday night when she was approached by someone who told her she needed to leave.

She said she reluctantly agreed, but argued with several officers in an outside hallway.

In a telephone interview with the newspaper, Young said she told them her shirt wasn't a protest but a message of support.

Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said Young wasn't ejected from the gallery and she left on her own. She couldn't provide additional details.

Young's husband found out about the incident after Bush's speech and called it unacceptable.

The wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Indian Shores, told a newspaper that she was ejected during the State of the Union address for wearing a T-shirt that says, "Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom."

I saw video tape of Cindy Sheehan's as she zippered up her coat to cover the t-shirt. I couldn't read every word but there was a number 24?? and the word dead on the front of the t-shirt. The number was hand written in black magic marker and I assume was the latest body count figure for American soldiers in Iraq.

According to an AP story:

Sheehan, who was invited to attend the speech by Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D- Calif., was charged with demonstrating in the Capitol building, said Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider. The charge was later changed to unlawful conduct, Schneider said. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Sheehan was taken in handcuffs from the Capitol to police headquarters a few blocks away. Her case was processed as Bush spoke.

Schneider said Sheehan had worn a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to the speech and covered it up until she took her seat. Police warned her that such displays were not allowed, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman said.

Bill Nelson is a Dem, but he's a fairly tame one, because Florida is increasingly a red state and he's got to watch his step.

That said, however, I think this just proves that the law was simply being applied across the board, and that the police had been told not to allow any kind of slogans, positive or negative.

"There is simply no more class or ettiquette left in our congress."

Well, the Dems proved that in spades last night....did you see hillary jump up to celebrate the killing of the Presidents efforts to help Social Security. Did you see them sit on their hands when he talked about tracking Al Quaida through phone calls in this country....I'm sure bin Laden is Very happy with the Dems this morning.

Good news - it shows that the Bush Administration rejected ANY political statements on those fashionable T-shirts that some trie to wear, pro or con. That'll put some slippery stuff in the road as the MSM tries to get traction with Ban-Sheehan

Would've been cool if they'd put her in the same "holding are" as Sheehan; maybe she could've taught Sheehan a thing or two.

What kind of goober thinks it appropriate to wear a freaking tee shirt to a State of the Union Speech?

"It was the State of the Union Speech .. not a rally and T-shirts for or against is not the place to wear it"

I'd agree the T-shirt was inappropriate, but I'd argue that the SOTU speech is nothing more than a rally these days. At one spot last night Bush had hesitated at a designated applause spot and the camera showed a section of folks clapping politely. Suddenly, they realized they were on camera. The applause instantly became much more energetic and they stood. Not because of anything Bush said, but because they were on camera and expected to be enthusiastic.

This is not a slam at Bush -- this has been going on for many, many years now. It's sad.

Men should be in suits and ties, and women should dress in the same manner.

NO ONE should be allowed in the building without being appropriately dressed, EVER.

I was amazed at the number of women who were wearing BRIGHT fluorescent red pink, green, and yellow dresses. They just shouted "Look at me! Look at me!"

The floor of congress is a place of business and decorum. Those dresses were not appropriate business attire. The women need to tone it down.
