WASHINGTON As President Bush prepared to address Congress, some members of the House began calling for his impeachment a call that has been growing over the last few months, when only the far fringes of the American left called for his ouster.
On Tuesday, eight-term California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters said the president should be impeached for authorizing the warrantless surveillance of some Americans through the National Security Agency.
"If a president's untruthfulness about sexual relationships is an impeachable offense, then surely spying on American citizens, undermining the Constitution and contravening current standing law are impeachable offenses," Waters said comparing Bush's alleged crimes to ones former President Clinton was tried for.
But not all Democrats are on board yet. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told FOX News that he doesn't think the threshold for impeachment has been crossed yet.
"As far as I'm concerned at this stage it's too early to talk about impeachment. We'll have to see if there's more to this," Reid said.

I suspect that if they tried that it would be a huge backlash and the republicans would regain the house in 2008 as well as retain the White House. People want them to work on their behalf, not do impeachment nonsense.
Democrats call for Bush's impeachment...L.O.L..does it rain in Seattle???
What about impeachment in the case of the judiciary such as Supreme Court justices who render particularly eggregious decisions? (The recent eminent domain decision in Kelo v City of New London comes to mind.) Would it be good to keep the courts from crossing the line by holding out impeachment as a threat or would that deprive the courts of too much independence? Do you think that incompetent judicial decisions are ground for impeachment in the Judicial sphere? (If I recall correctly, in a Judicial impeachement a judge is NOT automatically removed from office upon conviction. After a judge is convicted another vote is taken to decide the punishment and whether he should be removed and barred from holding future office).
If they keep the impeachment talk up it's gonna hurt them in November.
don't forget the people concerned 'bout lack of protecting our national security because immigration laws not being enforced.
This will definitely backfire, especially since alot of them voted to support the war.
I'd like to know who listens to mad Max?
San Fran Criscoites?
My gawd I really hope they try. If they do, the Dims can kiss '08 bye-bye, and probably '12 too.
Corretct. Time to impeach JFK and investigate Bobby.
Exactly. Or, alternatively, as the head of the Executive branch, he is also the highest ranking Law Enforcement person. If a cop is convicted of perjury he is NEVER able to work in law enforcement again. That turd, Clinton, was able to keep his job.
It's interesting that lawyers are, somehow, able to be convicted of perjury and still practice law...
