So the first 170 protectionism-laden years of our country consisted of decline? And what's the danger? That China will lose the ability to smash us in 20 years? I noticed the typical lumping of isolationism with protectionism when they are two seperate animals. This country has been involved in international matters during both protectionist and free-trade periods.

Yeah, I was wondering why the president created this bogey man of protectionism/isolationism in his speech? He mentioned it, what, three times? As much as I'd like to, I don't see any threat of a return to isolationism/protectionism.
