PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Stew Albert, a co-founder of the Youth International Party, whose members were more commonly known as Yippies, died Monday of liver cancer. He was 66.
Albert was clubbed by police during the 1968 anti-war Democratic National Convention riot and was named as an unindicted coconspirator at the Chicago 7 trial.
The Yippies in 1968 advanced a pig as candidate for president and in 1970 invaded Disneyland for a day. In 1970, Albert ran for sheriff of Alameda County, Calif., but lost.
Albert moved to Portland in 1984 and continued to carry an idealistic torch for the 1960s. "I came here to bring the holy spirit of the '60s to this younger generation," he said in 2000.
His 2005 memoir was titled "Who the Hell is Stew Albert?" because of a question Howard Stern posed on his radio show. "It's less a case of local boy makes good, more a case of local boy makes trouble," Albert said.
Albert was born Dec. 4, 1939, in Brooklyn, N.Y., an only child. He graduated from Pace University and in 1964 began organizing against the Vietnam War.
In 1988, he attended a 20-year reunion in Chicago of 1968 protesters.
"I imagine Americans secretly miss the passion of my generation," he wrote of that experience.
In 1996, Mayor Richard M. Daley, son of former Mayor Richard J. Daley, invited him to Chicago with his pal Tom Hayden, a former roommate, for a day of reconciliation.
Albert was co-author with his wife of "The Sixties Papers" anthology. He ran the Yippie Reading Room online and continued to blog until the day before his death.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Gumbo Albert, and daughter, Jessica Pearl Albert. A funeral service is scheduled Wednesday.
Either your comment was misdirected to me, or you think I am belittling him. My remarks had nothing to do with this individual. My reference was to the obituary 'book of style' favored by the MSM.
Didn't you know Stew Albert?
Wow, that's what I said!
The Yippies were a media event and tried to present themselves as anarchists in the mold of the (SF) Diggers and the NY Motherf.....'s They were pale imitations that lived in relative wealth and stupidity.
Reminds me of PAPA Joe's purges.
The Yippies were like the YAFfies.
Except the YAFfies washed, didn't smoke pot all the @!#$!@$ time, and had sense.
Other than that, they were exactly alike.
How about that. One quick google and we find that Hayden has his own dull self-promoting web site... here: http://www.tomhayden.com/ How very commercial. Didn't Rubin end up selling stocks?
Somebody else would have lead the charge against the Frogs. If you were ruled by the frogs, what would it take for them to stop you?
Give Props to Ho Chi Minh, he hated the french before it was cool to hate the french.
:)
"Bad Hippies"!
Wonder how many copies that one sold?
5?
If you think dying from liver cancer is painless, then I'm assuming you are one of those that also believes Terri Schiavo went into the good night in a state of euphoria.
You see, your cold, clinical, cut and paste job on the symptomology of liver cancer does not take into account the emotional pain, the pain associated with any cancer that metastisized from the original growth, which yes is largely painless and therefore left undiagnosed until the tumor has grown larger.
I recoil at those that can, in a cold fashion, take delight in the death of another, regardless of political stripe or past deeds.
Death visits us all, don't forget that fact.
To invoke your dog Champy's death is quite shallow in the context of the article.
To use your cold flippancy, it sounds like ole' Champy wasn't much of a champ after all.
Actually McCarthy references cost extra. ;)
Hey Joe, take a close look at how long I've been a member here, I don't need you to suddenly inform me what FR is all about, nor do I feel led to defend my post, to you.
I've never heard of this Yippie "leader", that tells you how much of an impact he made on the body politik.
He's now dead, which should give you some relief.
And yes, he died from liver cancer. I can speak of the passing of a human without political histrionics.
For you to equate this decedent with Stalin, Mao and Hitler is laughable at best.
Agreed. My husband died from liver cancer. Not a nice thing to watch.
"The more you know™"
I am sorry for yoour loss. I thank you for sharing, and I cannot add anything else past what you so eloquently said.

Puhleeze, spare me the faux sensitivity. As far as the "cut and paste", nah... I actually have seen people die of both primary and metastatic liver cancer.
Nowhere did I "take delight" in this person's death... however the great "emotional" outpouring concerning this person is a joke.... kinda like your post.
I "feel" nothing towards or against this person. He died...big whoop. I didn't know him. I don't recall him affecting me in any manner during his life. Therefore I'm not going to go all weak at the knees, bring my hand to wipe off a fake tear and pretend to be sorrowful.
I'll shed tears for guys I know that suffer or have died... or great men who've made a mark on our culture... this person died. Pick any name of any city obituary column and substitute, you wouldn't know the difference yourself....other than making yourself wet with sanctimonious (look at me how sensitive I am) fake "care" for the death of this guy.... by the way "Champy" was a great German Shepard who passed about 40 years ago.... as was "Kiley" another fine Shepard I lost 3 years ago.... as far as "what's his name"..... didn't know him other than what the press told me about him. Even then, I'd take my dogs over him..... especially after reading about him.
that's what make this country great. You like the "yippie" , I cherish my Shepards.... neat huh?
useful..... member of my family..
some guy that died, who didn't affect me in the least....
wow look.... a red x...., but you know what he looked like right.. so just picture him in your mind as you "knew" him....long hair, spewing hate about the country, God, our troops and "corporate" America. yawn....
