This may be why the grey suit was smirking.

With President Bush's State of the Union address last night and the confirmation of Samuel Alito, it can feel like a dark moment. Here's the important thing to remember: the 2006 elections are only a few months away—and if we keep our eyes on that goal, we're in a position to win big.

So, instead of griping about the lies and inaccuracies of the president's speech last night, we're going on offense big time. We have a new plan to change control of Congress in 2006. There are three million of us on this email list. If we all commit ourselves to making this happen, it will happen. But we need to start now.

Victory this Fall won't be easy—it'll require people on the ground, ads in the air, and, of course, money to pay organizers. This week, we're aiming to take the fight to the Republicans by raising the first $250,000 for our election plan. If just 2,500 of us contribute $100, we can do it. Will you join us?

Our goal is to raise $250,000 before tomorrow at midnight.

This election is our best opportunity to win yet. The wheels are coming off of the right-wing machine and polling shows that Americans are fed up with Republican control and ready for a change in direction. (Check tomorrow's e-mail for details on a special phone briefing about the election plan.)

We're not a part of the Democratic Party, and we like it that way. But that means that MoveOn has no other source of funds than our members. The average contribution is $50. In short, if you're able to support this program, we'll be able to do it—and if you don't, we can't.

Here's are the three pillars of the plan (look for more on a phone briefing about it tomorrow):

1) Hold Republicans accountable every day on Iraq, their corruption, and the economic reverse-Robin-Hood-ism that has become their trademark. We'll be cranking up our Operation Democracy program to full throttle—our biggest push yet. (See below.) This is earlier than any other effort out there.

2) Encourage Democrats to stand up and fight. Democrats win when they act strong—it's our job to support them when they do and call them out when they don't. We'll push in our advocacy work for Democrats to take bold stands on key issues.

3) Get out the vote. In an off-year election, turnout will be key. If as many Democrats vote as turned out in 2004, we'll win a lot of close Congressional races. That will take some nitty-gritty work on the ground. We'll be adding a "national phone program" to Operation Democracy so MoveOn members in any town or state can volunteer.

Are you in? We'll need about $3.5 million over the next nine months to run this whole Operation Democracy program—before we raise money for TV ads or candidates.

The best chance we have to stop the Bush agenda is the election this coming November and everything is on the line. Please contribute today.

Thanks for all you do.

P.S. Here is some more information about Operation Democracy—our winning field network of MoveOn leaders and teams. (Phone briefings are scheduled for Thursday evening.)

Operation Democracy is a national network of MoveOn members—leaders really—who organize activities that are focused on generating press coverage and doing sophisticated advocacy.

It has made a big impact—thousands of events have been organized since it was started. Based upon a very successful test we're spreading it from Coast to Coast. As we get closer to the election, Operation Democracy will focus on a Get-Out-The-Vote program talking directly to voters.

Paid organizers working side-by-side with MoveOn volunteers have made a big difference. How big of a difference? We hoped that communities with organizers could do 150% better than communities without an organizer. In fact they have gotten 277% as much media and identified 323% as many go-to leaders we can count on. They are tripling the reach of MoveOn members!

These organizers cost a lot to keep out there. That is why we're fundraising.
