With no more information than this article, it sure sounds like deputy Barney Fife. He should be a big, steaming, smelly heap o' trouble.

Is there a link to the video????????????
To: TChris
I naturally tend to side with the serviceman on this...not having more information. If the cop shot him as revenge for the car chase...he is going down for attempted murder. The victim is alive and can talk.

California. What a shocker.

Survived 3 CHEST shots?
And why would anyone in their right minds surrender the ORIGINAL videotape to investigators from THAT department...?
Sorry to say it, but I believe this story...

We are sure getting a lot of bad reporting on this incident. I saw this tape early this morning. The tape was very dark and the single officer had two perps on the ground. He seemed to tell them "do not get up". The airman (in civilian clothes) was cursing at the officer. There was certainly no reason for the officer to tell either one of them to "get up".

Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department took the original tape, refusing to release it to the public or describe what it shows.

Unless there's something here that we don't know, this doesn't look good for the cop involved, particularly given that the Airman was a passenger and not the driver during the 100 MPH chase.
To: Ben Mugged
How did you see the unreleased video?

How is this tragic for anyone but the guy who got shot while obeying a cops orders?
Well, maybe there is another tragedy. The taxpayers of this jurisdiction are going to take it in the neck defending another incompetent cop.

Brings up a point: If you happen to shoot video of any incident, try to make a copy before surrendering it to the police. This is especially true if the video shows any excessive use of force by a police officer.
You could, actually, try to refuse to give it to the police officers at the scene, but it's unlikely that you'll succeed. Best bet is to wander off after shooting the video, make a copy, then let the police and the media know that the video exists.

Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department took the original tape, refusing to release it to the public or describe what it shows. Word to the wise. Always make multiple copies of any tapes before turning one over to the cops. Hide extra copies away like squirrels hide nuts. And put a copy on the web to get it spread far and wide as quickly as possible.

100 mph car chase that ended in a wreck? Cop should have shot them both.
