He's in for LIFE! They can't touch him now.........

Frankly that's what bugs me about the process.

Now, let's not be ugly. I like Sandra Day O'. Really, I do. I don't agree with her on abortion, but, she was right on Bush v Gore. She wrote that instructions for using ballots were posted in the polling places in Florida. You know she's right about that. She's a sweet lady.

I felt it was pretty selfish of the Dems in the US Senate to prolong this nomination process for so long... it took what seven months.

Amen! Now she will have time to devote to her ailing husband.

That, and have something of a retirement of her own. It always seems sad to me that when people get appointed to this court they never retire, they keep working till the day they die. They don't have to, of course, they're not REALLY the American Popes, though it often seems like they are. But I think the power is like Turkish Delight to them. Can't let go.

Your memory is WAY off. It may seem that way, but Bush didn't announce the Alito nomination until October 31. It might work out to seven months if you add the Harriet Miers misstep.

"OK, Ruthie and John Paul, time to retire."

Both of these are near or over 80 and reportedly in poor health. Can you imagine the screaming of the Flying Monkeys if Bush gets to nominate four Justices. Schumer and Biden will tear out their plugs.

The problem with O'Connor was that she was a politician in a courtroom. We're supposed to have judges in a courtroom.

Should have waited and done it tonight at the start of the State of the Union speech.

Notice how he describes it as a "partisan victory", as if the partisanship was somehow only characteristic of the Republicans? Or am I reading too much into that?

Sandra is a nice lady, she just came down with DCitis. They all do. Kennedy's case appears terminal.

Her retirement letter is dated 7/1/05. Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb. Sorry one day short of seven months.

I thought maybe it has to do with AZ... Goldwater, McCain, and O'Connor.

All of the blame was laid at the Dems' feet, though. They weren't the ones who squabbled over Miers until she had to be withdrawn.

"The problem with O'Connor was that she was a politician in a courtroom."

That's a good description of her. Several times, in major cases, her legal mind led her to one conclusion, but her ear for how things would play out in the press - or simply her fear of making waves - caused her to vote another way. This is why the logic of some of her decisions is so tortured.
