I do not think there is anything in the Constitution that is antithetical to the Catholic Faith. Now, there are certain unwritten emanations of penumbras that are positively anathema to it.
Does it also give you immense pride and satisfaction that twelve Catholic senators, and the Catholic voters who keep them in office, are the backbone of the abortion holocaust in this country?
Sheesh!
Chafee's American Conservative Union rating tells the story.
2004 40%
2003 35%
Life time 41%
He is a worse than a middle of the roader, in fact, leans left!
Agreed. The President FINALLY listened to his base and smacked the ball out of the park. This legacy will stand for a very long time. Hopefully he gets a chance to PACK the court.
The vote was 58 to 42 in favor.
Now, if only a few more vacancies were to occur soon...
Welcome to FR. Now go home.
Re your #33:
"I trust that those two Catholics will vote according to the Constitution, and not according to their faith."
Since our founding documents and Law, to include the Constitution, were essentially based on a generic Christian common Faith (common at the time, anyway), and Faith-based morality and philosophy, then I don't see that they are neccessarily mutually exclusive.
Obviously, you do.
I don't think that any "Catholic" Judge, President, or any other political potentate is going to make you eat fish on Friday, say "Hail Marys", fiddle with a Rosary, or take a bath in Holy Water any time soon, though - so not to worry about it.
Ain't America great?
Got a final Senator-by-Senator vote tally?
Hey!
"Pack" the court??
That term should be reserved only for FDR, who wanted to expand its number of members.
Choosing nominees as the go is NOT "packing" the court. It is his duty and privilege as POTUS!
Leave it to the socialist libs to use that nasty word!
There's now 5 altogether, right? Thomas, Scalia, Roberts, Alito, Kennedy? Not that Kennedy's that good of a Catholic...as it appears.
Actually, I think they will. Esp. Alito.
Chafee (RI) No ??
RI=RINO?
But religion can be at odds with the Constitution. We currently see the death penalty as constitutional, but the Catholic Church effectively says that capital punishment should not exist in the United States.
"Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. In a nutshell, we have life without parole in a maximum security prison, so we're not allowed to execute people."If however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity with the dignity of the human person.
"Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm without definitively taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."
-- Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae #2267
I want justices ruling on the constitutionality of capital punishment, not on whether a guy in Rome says it's allowed. I do think these justices will rule on the Constitution.
"How dumb some FReepers can be."

Magic Bullet was great during both Alito and Roberts hearings. He was also great when he fought for Thomas. However conservatives are never going to forget (and forgive) Bork. That's why Spectre is forever going to be labeled as a RINO.
Faith is different things to different people, and beliefs differ. How else do you get one church saying "God hates fags" and another ordaining homosexuals?
Whatever the source of the principles of the Constitution, it is the text of the Constitution that should be ruled on, and not whatever a jurist's current faith happens to be.
This country had this scare over JFK, and it was unfounded. And I don't think it will be a problem now. I was only responding to a mention that they are Catholic, as if that were supposed to influence their decisions.
Not only Diebold, but the Bush-Cheney-Halliburton Hurricane Generator!
Re #45:
"...if Ginsburg and Souter can follow the path of either Rhenquist or O'Connor..."
Maybe Judge Ruthie will walk too close to a lawn sprinkler and melt down...
