Good Monday morning, fellow Freeper political junkies. One of the more ridiculous episodes of political theater is about to play itself out on the Senate floor, as the John Kerry-led democrats mount an exercise in political futility which will further expose their total irrelevance..So join us today, or drop in on occasion, for the festivities...

If the cloture vote should somehow fail, the Republicans MUST invoke the Nuclear Option immediately. Otherwise 60 votes will have become the de facto threshold for Supreme Court confirmation.

The cloture motion won't fail. Alito's performance doesn't admit it. But I agree, if the DEMs manage to get 41 fools, then the GOP has to raise the point of order, etc.

I think that a 60 vote hurdle is de facto in place now - see timidity on the part of the President to nominate clear constitutionalists, and the protocol of engaging Reid, Frist, Specter and LEahy in his pick of Harriet Miers.

See also the delay in bringing Myers and Boyle up for vote, and in getting Saad, Haynes and Kavanaugh out of Committee. THose nominations are apt to trigger an abuse of cloture, and neither the GOP nor the DEMs want to deal with it.

If for some reason Alito is not confirmed by tomorrow the president ought to invite him to sit next to Laura in the gallery tomorrow night. Then use the SOU speech to blast the obstruction tactics.

In any case though, it looks like approval is certain. Pro Alito forces have over 60 votes to stop a filibuster, unless a half dozen or so Demo senators are blackmailed into switching sides. This would make their public relations image even worse though.

Democrats always amaze me with their stupidity and tin ears. By pulling this stunt, all they have done is give the President a platform to speak during the state of the union which of course, will make more people angry at the democrats which of course, will drive more people to the polls to vote for Republicans. It must have been the drugs during the sixties. How else can you explain the constant stupid mistakes.......

Having just "flown back" from the five star hotel in davos, switzerland, Supre jean pierre kerri, has vowed he will filiBLUSTER until death {or 4:30 pm} whichever comes first. A gal {I think} over at du is swooning and jean is constantly refereed to as "President kerri". Isn't that just precious.

Speaking of SOTU, some Democrats are going to gather in front of a podium and do their SOTU pre-buttal tomorrow afternoon. The Code Pinkos too, but that's another event entirely.

Reid's laying low, trying to play nice (it must be so difficult for him). Despite all of his and Howard Dean's screeching that "not one dime" of Abrahamoff money went to any Dim, Harry's awash in it, knows it, and hears the hounds closing in. Also, there have apparently been some rumblings that Reid may not be Minority Leader much longer - Biden was apparently asked about this a few days ago (and declined to comment).

I'm stuck here at work, so I'll be dropping in on the thread every now and then to check in.

the John Kerry-led democrats

You know the 'rats are in trouble when they start following Kerry. Of course, this is due to the total failure of Dean or Reid to get the party organizaed, but even still...

"Am I missing something, he was the worste candidate EVER!~!!!!! Liar, proven military cheat.....

and he got defeated by a greater margin then any other presidential candidate ever... "

I don't believe 'proven' military cheat is accurate. There are certain unanswered questions but since his
records have not been released, it is all hearsay!

Also, I am not sure he was beaten buy the greatest margin ever.

Good summary. Kerry is just using the filibuster to ingratiate himself with the Moveon.org crowd. He is and always has been a political opportunist.

Yeah... I have to admit to a gnawing little suspicion that Frist & Co. are about to get blindsided (again) by the Kerry-Kennedy Korps. We're forever Charlie Brown, and they are Lucy with the football. Maybe this time, she's really gonna let me kick it....

All this lame, retarded filibuster farce is, is an attempt to revive a dead run at the presidency AGAIN!

Some people should just quit while they are ahead, but then again, they are Democrats, they don't know any better.

In the beginning......they will be pumping their cyber arms in an imaginary victory but when the dust settles around them in their mommy's basements, we'll hear anger, whimpering, threats, sobbing, and promises to leave the country. It's been the pattern since 2000.....sooooo predictable, we don't even need to observe except for amusement purposes.. So let 'em close it.

Yep. More groundwork for vitiating the cloture motion. Not that it matters (vitiate or not), but it is interesting that cloture discussions are being couched in terms of the extent of debate, and the ability of the Senators to reach individual conclusions.

This is what he said (it was Thursday even - the Senate was only open for 2 hours on Friday) ...

Mr. REID. Mr. President, I wish to express the appreciation on our side for giving us adequate time to talk about this most important nomination. The distinguished majority leader could have filed cloture last night because I told him I didn't have it cleared yet for a time-certain vote. There has been adequate time for people to debate. No one can complain in this matter that there hasn't been sufficient time to talk about Judge Alito, pro or con. We have had a dignified debate. We have gone back and forth, and I hope this matter will be resolved without too much more talking. But everybody has a right to talk.

Again, I express my appreciation to the distinguished majority leader for making sure everybody had ample time to talk on behalf of Samuel Alito or against him.

Chaffee may provide a vote now and then but forever will be in the RINO category. If he gets beat in the primary which is a distinct possibility, a clear message can be sent to the others even if the Democrat wins in the general. It is time to stand up to them, otherwise what majority do we really have? Same old, same old.. which is not good enough. Get rid of him.

There once was body named Senate,
Your Social Security it spent it,
While blow hards prattle,
Good men get saddled,
With a character hit.
