Says he was proud to introduce Alito, but when asked by Specter if the introduction was an endorsement, Lautenberg said he would let Alito's record and performance during the hearings speak to the question.
Praising O'Connor as applying the facts and law fairly and with an open mind. THinks that this open mined approach is necessary - no political agenda.

"Every day Americans"--he's going against Alito--hope his constituents in New Jersey remember that come election day.

Maybe Menendez figures that cloture will be invoked and Alito will be confirmed w/o his vote so the Italians of NJ will forget about his no votes come November.

As a measure of how bad Reid was, Lautenberg sounds positively exciting in comparison!
Riddick's rules recite a requirement to vote from the desk. They further recite that a UC request, that a vote be recorded for a Senator not present, is not in order. The chair is specifically prohibited from entertaining a UC requrest t add the name of a Senator to a vote after the result of that vote has been announced.
