Russia - 500 fishermen stranded on ice floe
Agence France Presse | January 30, 2006

ABOUT 500 fishermen were stranded on a large ice floe off the island of Sakhalin in far eastern Russia, officials said today.

Rescuers had managed to take 15 people off the ice using motorboats, Russia's emergency situations ministry said.

A strong wind was pushing the floe out to sea and officials were preparing to use a hovercraft and helicopters in the rescue effort, Russian news agencies reported.

Despite repeated warnings from authorities, fishing through holes in the ice remains popular in Russia and fishermen often stray far from the shores of lakes and seas.

Don't feel cold: they are warming themselves by internal combustion, @ 80 proof.

' Despite repeated warnings from authorities, fishing through holes in the ice remains popular'

Note the source- Agence France Presse - The frogs are more familiar with bobber and sinker fishing....in a sewer.

" how much do you think it would take to warm an elephant?"
Don't know; like Bart Simpson, "do not have an elephant, man!" - and not only do not I have one now, but have never had it, either.

I suppose the fishermen were hanging out at the local pub when one of their members came running in saying, "Hey there's an ice floe out there." Bored out of their minds, the fishermen grabbed their beers, a couple of kegs, hopped on the ice floe and threw a raging party. Nobody noticed when the ice floe moved out to sea, and nobody thought to bring along a boat.

I'm sure one of them, probably the one sitting next to the keg, "Damn... We forgot to bring the vodka."

Meanwhile, on the shore, the fisherman with the peg leg, carrying a case of Russia's finest vodka got left behind. He probably said, "Well, more vodka for me."

And no, I didn't read the article to see how the Russians got stuck on an ice floe.

They were trying to defect to the USA. Ice fishing is just a cover story to save the Russian government embarassement. Ice fishing was how they were going to feed themselves during the trip.
