Oh, and this is also kind of a test, too... I usually think these things through very carefully and in great detail before I careen in and shoot myself in the foot... ;)
I figured if this one comic strip post went over OK, and wasn't taken as spam, then I might make some "Special to FreeRepublic" stuff to post, later. So I'm testing and poking and measuring and gauging...
Off the top of my head, I can think of 2 FReepers who've done so in their strips (Faithmouse & Gulag The Bear). I've also seen Free Republic mentioned in Day By Day by Chris Muir. I'm sure there were others. Also what did you mean by taken as spam?
Without Pookie18's posting of them though, there's no way I'd ever have heard of it, and I've been sending the URL to lots of folks. I'm sure you are aware of that, and I see how difficult it is to word things in such a way as to recognise the exposure you get while at the same time pointing out that you need traffic to your site. Perhaps a good solution is to have Pookie post the daily 'toon from a week back (with 3 on Monday). Some of the syndicated toons do that in relation to the print editions; print is a week ahead of the web.
Pookie18, you rock. I love the daily toons. It's the first thing I look at every day.
You do a great job Pook. Personally, once they start b!tchin, drop em and let them build their own base! I never would have seen Carsonfires cartoons little less hit his web site without you posting them. Besides, who hits web advertisment anyways? I've discovered so many more editorial cartoonists that I only found through your posts. They say nothing is better than free publicity. Apparently thats not the case! Keep up the great work! Your posts are what I look forward to in the morning.
"Also what did you mean by taken as spam?"
I mean, people appreciate when you post comics, here, as Pookie, but if I post one of my own comics here, as the creator of the comic, there's a greater chance that people will think that I'm spamming. It would be a natural assumption, too, since I obviously have a vested interest in promoting the comic.
This is why I said you did indeed do me a great favor in posting my work. I'm not attacking you, but it still sounds like you and a few other people might think that I am.
In my own defense, where there seems to be one necessary, I have to repeat/rephrase/make clear: the only revenue I make from my comic strip is from page views and donations, and that means, more specifically, people reading the comics -- the archives, regardless of the age of the comics -- on my website. Regardless of your personal feelings towards ads, they do generate some revenue. Quite a lot of revenue, for very popular comic strips online.
And this isn't just being greedy. I'm just trying to pay rent and a few bills (for reference, there have been a total of $2 in donations since Pookie started posting my comics here, and hardly anyone was visiting at all until this post). I make very little money as a cartoonist, and don't supplement it very well as a seasonal temp. And I've had some big failures in the past that I'm still trying to work through. That might make me a little more anxious than some other cartoonists... my margin for error right now is very thin, and I have other people depending on me to consider, as well. I really am not doing this just to be a jerk.
