CARACAS, Venezuela Activists at the World Social Forum plan a demonstration against U-S proposals to extend a wall along the Mexico border and toughen immigration laws.

They say the demonstration against the measures will start in southern Mexico and culminate in El Paso in May.

Activists at the forum in Venezuela accuse the governments of the United States and Mexico of "violating human rights" and not protecting migrants.

A House bill proposes building 700 miles of additional fences along the border while making illegal entry a felony. It would enlist military and local police to help stop undocumented migrants. The bill must still be considered by the U-S Senate.

I would ask why do I have to leave my country to find prosperity?

How dare you use logic when payoffs are off the chart! Mexican slavelabor is the only thing that saved us from a 2000% uncrease in a head lettuce from 10 years ago. Oh, wait.... that already happened.......

Sorry. Nevermind. :-)

If you had a 2000% uncrease or increase, how much were you paying 10 years ago?

oh man,,,can't I even exaggerate a little? :-)

Actually lettuce was $0.29 a head 10 years ago. Now it's floppin' around between 1 and 2 bucks.

So, you would not mind it being $5-$6 per head?

Hey, if you're going crazy, why not $30 or $40 a head?

Perhaps, but the price of iceberg lettuce (like any commodity) fluctuates, so my question still stands - how high would you draw the line at?

Keep in mind the record prices set in 2002, where they soared up to $60 a carton for 24 heads, according to the Federal-State Market News Service, forcing consumers to pay nearly three dollars for a head of lettuce. Of course, back then, extreme shortages were due to unusually cold weather in growing areas, not the lack of labor.

You are right I live in fear of the $1000 head of lettuce, I'm sorry I spoke up. Our great high tech economy would die off if we did not have stoop labor.

Lettuce does not need to get to $1000 per head for our economy to be in trouble - did you see my question above re: $4-$5 per head?

how high would you draw the line at?

What would a head of lettuce cost that's picked by a minimum wage earning American? Or a machine?

And can a collective of individual consumers compete with the "must have at any price" national restaurant & fast food chains for the same product?
