**** Satire ****
Insurgents Regret ABC News Friendly-Fire Incident
by Scott Ott

(2006-01-30) — Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, today expressed his regrets to ABC News for the injuries sustained by anchor Bob Woodruff and a videographer in what Mr. Zarqawi called, “this tragic incident of friendly fire.”

“The American news media has always treated us well,” the al Qaeda leader said in a printed statement. “We were trying to kill U.S. and Iraqi soldiers when this unfortunate accident occurred. We pray to Allah for the swift recovery of the injured, and hope they can be back on the job soon.”

A spokesman for ABC News said a preliminary investigation showed that the improvised explosive device (IED) which wounded Mr. Woodruff and his colleague Doug Vogt, was triggered by “an imperialist occupation of Iraq after the U.S. overthrew the nation’s duly-elected president, yet failed to find weapons of mass destruction.”

That parody is pathetic.

Four years after 9/11, don't you think most reporters have been vetted by those who are protecting our interests?

Since 9/11, all three anchors from ABC, CBS and NBC are gone.

While the news business always tends to be contrarian, it is not as controlled by the left as we think.

Woodruff and Vogt were risking their lives to get information to the U.S. If reports are correct that Woodruff's skull has been opened in order to relieve pressure on the brain, he is in bad shape.

There's nothing funny about any of this. It's tragic.

The reports I heard were from the head of ABC News this morning on Good Morning America.

I understand, and am not calling your account into question. I am just a little reluctant to take even ABC News accounts at face value. Something about verified sources, and accurate if not totally factual. I do know that the commanding officers involved at the site will be honest. Perhaps somebody in the Sandbox could attest to the depth of paperwork. It takes more time to properly document an incident like this than the Newsies would like.

As I often have observed on FreeRepublic, satire is not for everyone.

And this from ABC News today: The tide is turning against AQ in Iraq.

Certainly not for those dying of head injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Certainly you make my case utterly. Satire is for people who can separate the current event (people tragedy) from the overall and underlying concepts of perverseness, corruption, whatever, the satirist is shooting at. If one cannot separate those, then it is wise to avoid reading posts headed with the (in some people's case, warning) words, "Satire." It is not difficult to scroll past such posts if they disgust.

It seems the position that satirical comment is beyond the pale is strikingly similar to the liberals' well-known propsensity to lack humor that drives them to demand constriction on American freedom of speech.

Keep defending what looks to be a lack of discretion.

It's your prerogative.

I have never been called indiscreet by any human being who knows me. Quite the opposite. Which leads me full circle to my original reply to you: I have found that satire is not for everyone at FR.

Perhaps you should scour the place for a sense of irony?

Joan Rivers was asked once if she found humor in everything.

Her answer was interesting. She said almost everything is funny, except the death of a child.

Whereas a man like Larry David tends to clumsily think there are no limits to what a person should be able to ridicule.

Discretion trumps irony just about always.

Now we have descended from satire to the death of a child neither of us has named or knows, as if the two were at all linked in this conversation. Since you are determined to dwell in gloom, and resist all efforts to accept satire as a valid form of communication, I regretfully leave you to suffer in the dark.

Reports this evening say that Voght is in fair shape, joking and talking to visitors.

Woodruff, however, is in an induced coma, but has opened his eyes. His brain is swelling.

Other reports say he is not expected to come back to Nightline, and ABC producers are already discussing his replacement. (Charlie Whatzisname).

Here's the deal:

Because the MSM, in their rabid zeal -- I call it seething rage, a phrase I borrow from Rush -- to defame President Bush and his administration at every opportunity, have consistently misrepresented the situation in Iraq (by what they report and by what they chose not to report), the terrorist insurgency in Iraq has been emboldened and the length of time to reach stability has been extended -- THIS AT THE COST OF MANY, MANY OF OUR BRAVE ARMED FORCES WHO ARE SERVING OUR GREAT NATION WITH GREAT COURAGE, HONOR, AND DISTINCTION.

The longer it takes for stability to be achieved in Iraq, the longer it will take for the full deployment of all of our resources to the ongoing War Against Terrorists -- THIS AT THE POTENTIAL COST OF AMERICAN LIVES IN THE FUTURE.

There are some who say that the Democrats are now being led by the elitist Leftists in the MSM and "the Groups", and this would seem to be so. Moderation has left he field of play. When asked to give a one-word description of Democrats (Leftists), William Buckley once responded: Pussilanimous. Well, that was yesterday's Leftists. Today's are actually dangerous and life threatening, possibly on a massive scale.

Therefore, I have nothing but contempt for MSM "reporters" who continue to wage the propaganda campaign for the Leftist MSM elitists, and frankly think it ironic that they would be blown into stray body parts by the same vermin that they are (unwittingly?) aiding.

There is a talk radio host who has said, paraphrasing, "If today's media were around during WWII, you would be speaking German or you would be a lampshade." It is infuriating that we should be hamstrung in fighting our current enemy by such naive and delusional people.

Therefore, the simple truth is that I DO have far more concern for the human beings who are fighting ON OUR SIDE, although I would prefer that the rest would come to their senses. Barring that, perhaps we would all be better off if they were not in the game at all.

You can call me "mad" for this if you want to, but what I am is frustrated and angry with the MSM and Democrat Party, who would seem to care less how many Americans are killed in either front as long as the Leftist agenda is advanced. Were it left to me, I'd rather see everyone get along. It's better for business.

Time to make up now. Kiss, kiss. :O)

Not everything can be satirized successfully.

Brain hemorrhages generally fall into this category, particularly when they're suffered at the hands of terrorists.

I doubt that it will change the media stance.

Of course it won't. They're dug in for the long haul. I have yet to see an event that would shake them off of their long-held leftist tradition.
