Bottom line he needs Republican support and he can show he has supported many shades of it, from the extreme left of the party to the right and the middle. He supports the President as well at times to get more brownie points.

McCain is doing the Trianglulation plan. He cannot win the base so he's trying to put together enough in the middle and left to help his candidacy.
