Unintended consequences. Alito is not considered radical or out of the mainstream by most Americans. If Democrats succeed in blocking the vote or defeating Alito, they will generate more people to realize how out of touch with reality they are, thus helping future Republican nominations.

My take exactly on how it would be viewed but McCain would not want his name to the action as he would be tainted with it and also I believe that he supports it anyway, the worry of the poster did not seem to make any sense to me.
