Yeah people do the darnest things to protect themselves and then they drive like they are nuts in a snowstorm. Cars are far more dangerous than guns and we don't have bans on the cars that are involved in the most accidents. Maybe I shouldn't give them ideas but eventually we are going to see that angle taken because it could be very profitable. I think one reason you don't see such calls is because it would be a political disaster, the left being more about easy marks than any real idealogy.
For proof of this go read the blue laws on www.dumblaws.com
Name one of what at least Bert !.....:o)
Only knife I need is my Dewalt recipricating saw and my blades of choice are my 10 inch ripper, masonary blade, and chop blade. Of course I love my dry wall knife and chain saws too.
Our lodgings were not air-conditioned so we found time to go to a local shopping mall, several stories high, large open atrium in the middle. A friend wanted to buy a stainless steel knife so we stopped at a knife shop and he purchased one.
Going in and coming out, we wondered why the mall had so many police in pairs walking the corridors. When we met up with the rest of our party, we learned that Mr. Reagan and Bush senior were making an appearance--this was just after the convention.
We were never stopped or given a second look, as far as I know. But we didn't stick around, either.
Knives require a slightly higher level of commitment than guns to be functional as weapons, but anyone who doubts their effectiveness as such is denying the obvious.
No one had a knife to cut him out and he was choked to death
OTOH, restricting them in the hands of the lawful citizen is criminal.
He mentioned it in the context of the fact that he often testifies to juries as an expert witness about this issue, when someone is on trial for shooting someone who was armed with "only" a knife.
I've also posted many times on this forum that the key tactical advantage that firearms offer is the advantage of distance. You don't have to close with an enemy to kill / disable them. Of course, as I like to semi-jokingly point out, knives don't run out of ammunition, either.
"possession of a slingshot is a felony in New Jersey"
They'll get my wrist rocket when they pry it off my cold dead wrist lol
My wife borrows my stone to hone her instruments, I never seem to have it around when I need it. Instead I use this barely passable ceramic sharpener.
In my old age, I have gotten lazy. I use a powered automatic diamond hone then dress it off with a ceramic rod or steel.
It is not quite as sharp but cuts well and is so much less trouble.
You can get a CCW in MOntana for a knife, but I am not sure if that permits switchblades or gravity knives, either.
My 17 year old son religiously parks on the street at least a block from school, since there is always a knife and hatchet in the truck.
ping Good reading for firearms owners, too.
"To the true puritan -- whether pious Christian, secular humanist, or leveling socialist -- notions of rights and responsibilities are meaningless. All that matters is the prevention of sin. No form of prior restraint can be too severe, if it advances this fundamental goal."
I think they won.
The laws on automatic knives are pretty strange.
As I understand it, here are some highlights.
1. Unless the state you live in specifically bans them, you can carry them IF they are made in that state.
2. You can carry one if you are a cop, or a member of the armed forces.
3. You can carry one if you are a firefighter, or an emergency services person.
4. Legally, you can own them in the majority of states, but as I read it, you cannot carry it from state to state, unless you fit in one of the top categories.
5. You can send it via UPS or FED EX, but not by U.S. Mail.
Confusing? Yep.
Very good article. It applies far beyond the narrow scope of knives. Many people on this forum would agree with its narrow scope but contradict themselves on it's wider application to issues such as the war on drugs, anti-smoking laws, pornography and other inalienable rights.
"-- puritanism's unbroken record of failure will not stop people from trying again and again.
Every new generation is born with faith in the power of magic words -- written laws -- to prevent sin.
And every American generation for the past century and a half has produced its own new wave of oppressive and futile [prohibitive] laws. --"
As you note Zon, great essay..
Lets see what some of FR's foremost prohibitionists have to say about the war on knives..

muawiyah:
The writer certainly put together a lot of stuff on knives, but he attributed the anti-knife legislation of the early part of the 20th century to "bombings".
The 'anarchist threat' of that era is much akin to the mad bomber threat of today. -- Both can be used to effect repressive 'laws' on carrying arms.
Things like that always make me begin doubting the "conclusions" in such pieces ~ not necessarily the "facts" or "factoids", but the secondary results of too-casual analysis of the situation.
Whats "too-casual" about the fact that we are losing the right to carry arms without licensing laws? Why would you doubt that conclusion?
Frankly, once you've missed being "bombed" you develop a clear-cut aversion to the idea that bombers should be allowed to run loose.
How do you develop a clear cut test to separate potential bombers from ordinary citizens and prevent them from "running loose"? Lord forbid that in allowing citizens to 'run loose' we encourage mad bombers to do so.
The Democrats, on the other hand, think nothing of mad bombers getting Presidential pardons or commutations of sentence. We even have a case where one convicted bomber became a serious campaign advisor to the highest levels of the Democratic party (SEE: Brent Kimberlin for example).
Thus we conservatives should institute repressive laws on concealed weapons in order to insure that mad bombers can't run loose carrying? -- [or am I making a too-casual analysis of your ideas about the situation?]
Would CCW for handgun also cover a knife?
BTW - What is a gravity knife?
