Gitmo tactics continue to worry McCain

DAVOS, Switzerland -- Interrogation methods at the U.S. prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, are still a concern, Sen. John McCain said Friday, calling on authorities to process the cases of prisoners held for as long as four years without charge.

Some 500 men accused of links to Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime or the al-Qaida terror network continue to be held at the prison camp. Only a handful of the prisoners have been charged.

''What I was concerned about and continue to be concerned about is interrogation methods,'' McCain said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.

''What is critical, is that we adhere to treaties that we are signatories to and observe basic human rights and obey the law that we just passed concerning cruel and inhumane and degrading treatment.''

McCain also called for the prisoners' cases to be processed and heard.

FWIW, McCain makes a 5sec, non-speaking appearance on "24"...next episode, I think.

"McCain makes a 5sec, non-speaking appearance on "24""

Let me guess: Senator McLame (stage name), carrying a copy of his no-torture legislation, walks into the room where Jack Bauer is interrogating a terrorist and just as McCain begins to open his mouth, Bauer pumps McLame full of lead.?!

What's the matter with you?! Are you some kind of terrorist sympathizer? These are bad, bad guys! I don't care what is done with them and I won't let the fact that some people sent to Gitmo have been proven innocent disturb my illusions on this point one bit.

He'll never take Hill in the primaries. I know he can't be thinking of running as a Republican. He never has before.

McCain should stop worrying about the prisoners at Gitmo.
When he gets to be President, he can turn them all loose.
Of course, they will all be dead from old age by then.

Gourmet Fare at Gitmo 'Gulag'

From the article:

After Rep. Duncan Hunter's eye-opening description of how terrorist suspects are living high on the hog at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, prisoners from around the world will no doubt be clamoring for a 'gulag' cell of their own."

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, the House Armed Services Committee chairman began by detailing tonight's dinner menu at Gitmo - which all detainees, including one suspected of being involved in the 9/11 plot, will enjoy.

"For Sunday they're going to be having Orange Glazed Chicken, Fresh Fruit Roupee, Steamed Peas and Mushrooms, Rice Pilaf - we treat them very well," he told Fox.

Last night, Hunter said, the U.S. "torture victims" enjoyed the same kind of gourmet fare, including an entree of "Lemon-baked Fish."

On the other hand, feeding the detainees MRE's, the standard fare given to our troops on the front lines, is strictly verboten - considered an "abuse" under restrictions imposed by Congress, Hunter said.

The top House Republican also noted that the religious practices of the terrorist suspects held at the U.S. "gulag" are scrupulously accommodated, explaining:

"We give them honey and dates when they break fast at Ramadan. We give them prayer beads and prayer oil - all paid for [by the U.S. taxpayer.]

"In fact," he said, "if you did that for American GI's - if you had a call to prayer five times a day - the ACLU would sue on the basis that we violated the separation between church and state."

McCain's concerns are understandable, given his stay in the Hanoi Hilton. However, his posturing and pontificating are counterproductive to our war effort. A one on one between W and McLame is way overdue.

Sigh. I don't have the energy for this debate today. No, I am not a terrorist sympthathizer. Yes, I believe in some standards in the way we imprison and interrogate individuals. I also believe that there are many people in Gitmo and prisons in Iraq picked up in "sweeps" or "round ups" who have probably done nothing or close to nothing, and that some are dangerous individuals who wish to harm us. Determining which is which should be a part of the system of justice we are using. As far as I can tell, right now it isn't.

Would you kindly provide a list of names of these "many people rounded up"?

I was joking. The fact that you couldn't tell doesn't speak very well of the torture apologists, does it?

And what does McCain think these men will do if released?

I'm betting they return to the battle.

Will somebody please tell me again how THIS guy will carry the GOP conservative base and win the nomination?
No matter what the "experts" us, there is zero chance that this guy will get past New Hampshire.
