Durbin rips into Bush policies, GOP leadership

WASHINGTON — In an attempt to pre-empt President Bush’s State of the Union speech next week, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Thursday offered a scathing view of U.S. security at home and abroad under Republican leadership.

From Iraq to health care, Republican leaders in the White House and Congress have misplaced priorities, Durbin told an audience at the National Press Club.

"Too often, they have treated America’s urgent security challenges not as problems to be solved, but as opportunities for special interests," said Durbin, reiterating the Democrats’ accusation that Republicans have fostered a "culture of corruption" in Washington as evidenced by the recent scandal involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who shared the lectern with Durbin, also took up the theme.

How many times have you heard of a special-interest provision that was slipped into a bill in the dark of the night or a 1,000-page bill that no one was given time to read before voting on it?" Pelosi asked.

Durbin needs to shriek out more frequently lest we forget what a complete POS political hack he is.

I love it how the dems complain that Bush isn't doing enough after they spend every waking hour trying to prevent Bush from doing anything.

"...or a 1,000-page bill that no one was given time to read before voting on it?"

Before voting for it before voting against it or before voting against it before voting for it?

Dicky did a great job of complaining, but I didn't see him offering up any clear plans as an alternative.

The louder they shriek, the better. They're close to becoming such hysterical caterwhalers that in the future, even when rarely they have something important to say, it will be like fingernails on the chalkboard.

Their predictions are now so counter to reality that even the sheeple must not take them too seriously. I mean, we aren't losing in Iraq, and we aren't in the middle of a new Depression, and Americans aren't being carted off to reeducation camps, so they are beginning to look a might bit foolish.

Who cares what this TRAITOR has to say?

''A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.

A murderer is less to fear.''

Well, the Dems political language is going to have to evolve once they lose the next elections. You can't criticize a system without any ideas on how to fix it.

As a person who isn't high on Bush, it's still fairly easy to see that the Dems can't do anything proactive, at least on a large stage, because the party doesn't have any consistent priorities outside defaming and telling everyone how this country is becoming a fascist stronghold. At least the "old" Dem. party was proactive and had actual tangible ideas...for good or ill.

It's not to hard to see that people like it when someone sticks to their ideas, and doesn't waver to any and every public wind that comes along.

Little Dickie is setting himself up for a repeat embarassment - recall this one:

The Torturers Accept Your Apology

Senator Durbin:

Last week, you had the nerve to compare torture conducted by America’s brave men and women in uniform to torture conducted by Nazis, Soviets, and Khmer Rouge, and today you finally apologized. As well you should have: that comment was offensive. Deeply offensive. Many of the proud men and women at Guantanamo were deeply upset by it, shaking with anger, fear and doubt as they kicked naked men in the ribs and released the dogs. One soldier could hardly muster up the morale to brain a prisoner and stuff his semi-conscious head into a toilet bowl. But they found the strength and resolve to keep going, senator. Because they aren’t torturing for Nazis or communists or some third world hellhole. Those boys are torturing for the stars and stripes, senator - and don’t you forget it.

But the men and women in the United States military don’t just learn how to twist arms into stress positions and chain detainees to the ceiling. They also learn to forgive. And they’ve decided to forgive you, senator.

On behalf of all the torturers working hard today in the United States military, the Medium Lobster would like to say: apology accepted, Senator Durbin.

The boys in the 101st Thumbscrew Division would accept your heartfelt concession personally, but they’re busy serving the highest ideals of their country, beating a young Afghan man tied to the floor in his own feces. He is believed to be either a steadfast and vicious enemy of freedom intent on the murder of thousands of American citizens, or another cab driver. It’s so hard to keep track these days.

I don't live in Illinois, so maybe a FReeper who does can send this along to durbin:

“Do not say things. What you are stands over you the while, and thunders so that I cannot hear what you say to the contrary.” Emerson

bump!

Just as an aside...regardless of whether or not the Dimocrats are trying to "prebut" the President's SOTU, perhaps this is a good time to start praying for the President in anticipation of the speech...for those who are given to prayer, of course).

I know that there is a daily "Pray for the President" thread on FR...but in anticipation of this momentus speech (the only one, other than the inauguration, that virtually all the networks and cable news stations cover), we lift up to our wonderful God this awesome leader He has granted us (flaws and all), that he would be blessed with strength and courage, even in the midst of the virtual "lion's den" that is the U.S. Congress.

Just a thought...if the FReeper that does the "Pray for the President" thread wants to expand it for the next few days to specifically include the State of the Union address, I will yield to that thread. Thanks.

Hey, did Durbin again take a swipe at American soldiers, calling them "the Nazis, Soviets in their Gulags, or some madman regime like Pol Pot..."?
