BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - A 17-year-old high school student said he was humiliated when a teacher made him sit on the floor during a midterm exam in his ethnicity class _ for wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.
The teacher, John Kelly, forced Joshua Vannoy to sit on the floor and take the test Friday _ two days before the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Broncos 34-17 in the AFC championship game. Kelly also made other students throw crumpled up paper at Vannoy, whom he called a "stinking Denver fan," Vannoy told The Associated Press on Monday.
Kelly said Vannoy, a junior at Beaver Area Senior High School, just didn't get the joke.
"If he felt uncomfortable, then that's a lesson; that's what (the class) is designed to do," Kelly told The Denver Post. "It was silly fun. I can't believe he was upset."
Vannoy was wearing a No. 7 Broncos jersey on Friday, because he is a fan of John Elway, the Broncos' retired Hall of Fame quarterback.
Vannoy said he was so unnerved he left at least 20 questions blank on the 60-question test, and just wants out of Kelly's class because he's afraid the teacher won't treat him fairly now that the story reached the media.
"I'm going to have to deal with him for two more nine weeks (school quarters) and he's going to want revenge somehow," Vannoy said Monday. "I took the test. I'm shaking. I'm furious. I didn't know what to do."
Kelly, who wore a Ben Roethlisberger jersey Friday, and his principal, Thomas Karczewski, didn't immediately return messages left on their school voice mail Monday.
Big Beaver Falls Area School District Superintendent Donna Nugent said she was aware of the situation, but said confidentiality rules prevent her from commenting specifically.
"We'll take whatever action we need to in order for the student to feel comfortable," Nugent said.
Wearing number 7 was self-humiliation. The teacher was just helping.
The teacher should be forced to wear Seattle Seahawks jerseys for the remainder of the school year, and be a target for all the school's spitwads and rubber bands.
The teacher was a moron, and this kid is a mewling lil' girlieman.
geeze...someone should sue that teacher for being unprofessional.
I agree. Kid was begging for it!
To annoy Vannoy
Make ye no mistake. This is liberal re-education.
My dislike of the Steelers dates back to around the time Terry Bradshaw blatantly cheated in the Superbowl by forward fumbling 5 or more yards as he was forced out of bounds. That's why its illegal now. Was a moral and ethical lapse back then.
And, during the time of "Last year we knocked on the door. This year we beat on the door. Next year we're gonna kick the SOB in!"
That class is really going to help him make change, read, or otherwise be productive. So his disruption of the class was a tragic loss to Education, and no doubt robbed his classmates of a critical educational experience.
A 17yr old scared of a high school teacher.....yeah right.

Can we all say WIMP.
"Ethnicity class" - I'm guessing that the intent of the class is to make all of the white kids feel guilty and experience what this freak of a teacher thinks non whites feel. I really hope O'Reily and Hannity get hold of the curriculum and blast the teacher. I don't agree that he's a girly man. If there's a rule against shirts with labels on it, then fine, make him turn it inside out or call home to have a parent bring another shirt. Sitting on the floor? I remember having to kneel in front of the teacher's desk in sixth grade. I don't remember why but I survived. But having the other students throw stuff at him while he's trying to take the test, that is just plain sick and the teacher should be canned!!! If that had been my kid, I'd arrrrrrgggg, I have to go wash something.
I always thought the "forward fumble" rule dated back to the Oakland Raiders and Kenny Stabler, fumbling the ball forward to defeat the Miami Dolphins in a playoff game.
Stupid joke on the teacher's part, but the student is a big, crying baby.
Umm.. He was wearing a Broncos jersey..
This is the kind of story that will whip Denver into action and beat the Steel...
agreed....
