Well Friends, time for this chick to hit the hay!
I'll be back in a few hours to spin some more
tunes from 1986!! Hope you're enjoying the 80's!
To all of my heroes out there: you guys & gals have
my undying gratitude. I can never repay you for
what you have done for me. But know this, I
will do my best to keep our country a place
that you want to come home to.
Goodnight, my heroes, wherever you are!

I haven't heard about the Shostokovich statements, but, Zappa loved Stravinsky, Stockhausen, and Varèse. He was grounded in classical music and was an accomplished composer with a bottomless sense of wicked humor and absurdity and a deep love of DooWop music. His sidemen were top notch and required to read music and improvise on cue - I've heard Chad Wackerman say that 4 years of Berkley Conservatory was nothing compared to playing drums in Zappa's bands. Those bands were a traning ground for dozens of excellent players who have gone on to successful solo careers, much as Miles Davis' bands were boot camp for Jazz players decades earlier.
Zappa did a series of concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra in the early 80s with Kent Nagano conducting and I've heard that Maestro both praise and lament Zappa as one of the greatest and misguided composers of the 20th century. His brillance is sheer genius, however, Zappa'a unending satire and overbearing wit set him apart from the mainstream. He was the Salvador Dali of the music world and one of the most outspoken anti-drug activists in the music world.
