Olympia, Wash. -- Washington lawmakers passed a gay rights bill Friday in a major victory for activists who had watched the measure fail in the Legislature for nearly 30 years.
The bill passed the Senate 25-23, with a lone Republican joining Democrats in voting in favor. The House approved it 61-37, and Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire said she would sign it on Tuesday.
"We don't choose who we love. The heart chooses who we will love," said Republican Sen. Bill Finkbeiner. "And I don't believe that it is right for us to say ... that it's acceptable to discriminate against people because of that."
The measure adds sexual orientation to a state law banning discrimination in housing, employment and insurance on the basis of race, gender, age, disability, religion, marital status and other factors. Sixteen states have passed similar laws.
Passage of the bill drew applause from House members and cheers from onlookers who had packed the Senate's balconies.
After the measure failed last year by one vote in the Senate, many gay-rights activists directed their anger at Microsoft Corp., which had dropped its support for the bill. The company eventually urged passage after months of criticism.

Homosexuals can now become Boy Scout leaders and no one can complain or say anything derogatory about their deviant and perverted behaviors.
Oh, and thanks to all the GOP legislators who voted against their constituencies and supported the new special rights for un-natural sex acts. Yep, male transvestites can now wear women's clothes to work and their employers can't get rid of them. What an advance for civil rights....
Gay Mafia, strikes again. Now, in a more lucrative court near you!
Ping. Another state endorses the homosexual lifestyle and provides "protection" for deviants.
Senator Finkweener...... thy nose is brown!
lone Republican joining Democrats
he should become very lonely now
Good Lord, Senators are lowering themselves to this dialog on our nickle?
Thank God for 3 branches of government to maintain a sensible balance.
But the initiative affects the whole state, such as conservative central and Eastern Washington.
From what I've read on SOUNDPOLITICS.Com there was only one instance of discrimination in the past thirty years and it involved a straight guy who was fired at a restaurant so that the owner could hire some gay guys .....
Corrected.
Is Finkbeiner a Catholic? If not, what religion, if any, is he??
LOL!
So, they call it "love" what a man does sexually to another man? It is sick. It is a disgusting perversion.
FWIW, these are the states with anti-discrimination laws covering homosexuals:
California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin
These are the states that cover just public employees:
Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Indiana, Montana, Pennsylvania
I'd like to see a timeline of when these state laws were enacted so we can track our slide into oblivion and see if there is an acceleration.
fyi
"This is just way to get legislation on the books so they can push for gay marriage sooner. This is what this is really about."
This may be 'heresy' around here, but if I could get a guarantee from the gay community to never see another 'gay parade' in an American Street...or GAY TV SITCOMS....or GAY COWBOY MOVIES...I would gladly give them the right to marry. (sarcasm..i think..i might be willing to negotiate on those terms though....lol)
HEY...HEY...HEY.....whatcha doin' bring'un up FACTS!!!??? /sarcasm
The same people who will happily ban guns in citizen hands for "safety" reasons, ignore the very high risk gay lifestyle that is a cause of lethal disease transmission such as AID's.
thanks for the ping......Washington continues its descent....
