Earlier in the month, UK newspaper The Daily Mirror claimed Thandie Newton had screentested for a Bond girl role for the forthcoming film Casino Royale.

Several sources later confirmed that Newton had been tested opposite Daniel Craig, the new James Bond 007.

Today, rival newspaper The Sun claims she has been cast as Vesper Lynd in the movie, which is scheduled to open in theatres November 17th 2006.

According to the report, "The Sun can reveal [Thandie Newton] is the new Bond babe. She will star opposite Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, James Bond’s 21st big screen venture. Thandie, 33, a mum of two, was born in Zambia 10 years after the first Bond film was made in 1962."

It continues, "Her mother is a princess but the family emigrated to Cornwall when the girl who went on to star in Mission Impossible II was just five. Thandie — it’s pronounced Tandy — is now prepared for the glare of the spotlight that goes with being part of the Bond industry."

Newton recently starred in "Crash" - which was penned by "Casino Royale" screenwriter Paul Haggis.

For all intents and purposes she's already played a "Bond girl," or at least a knockoff of one, by appearing in Tom Cruise's "Mission Impossible 2" several years ago.

I haven't seen a Bond movie in years. Do they still
portray the American military/intelligence as
ineffective and silly? Talk about an inferiority complex.

Cruise has made some okay to good movies. MI2 was okay, for example, as was the recent "war of the worlds."

And, despite the fact it was made by liberal Meathead Rob Reiner, I quite liked "A Few Good Men."

And "Top Gun" is a classic of the Reagan era.

That's an odd picture. Her smile looks about as joyful as a dead fish, and her arms look like someone who is very awkward and doesn't know what to do with them.

Maybe it's not representative, but it certainly doesn't turn me on. I prefer someone with a little more spirit and character showing through.
