Philadelphia-Area Families Latest to Get Discounted Venezuelan Heating Oil The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA - Low-income families in the Philadelphia area will receive discounted Venezuelan heating oil in the latest deal bringing fuel to U.S. communities that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez claims are neglected by Washington.
Citgo, the Houston subsidiary of the Venezuelan national oil company, will ship 5 million gallons of heating oil marked down by 40 percent for distribution to low-income families next month in a deal brokered by Democratic Rep. Chaka Fattah.
Similar shipments have been made to New York City, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and American Indian reservations in Maine.
The Venezuelan national oil company ran full-page ads in The Washington Post and The New York Times touting the "humanitarian aid" and "generosity." Chavez's critics portray the heating-oil deals as a ploy to tweak the administration of President Bush, whom Chavez has attacked as a "madman."
Fattah said receiving the Venezuelan oil wasn't embarrassing and filled a real need. "This is not a political matter we have the ability to keep families in the Philadelphia area warm," he said.
Organizers said the cheap oil would go to area families who use up grants from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. There were 7,602 such households by early January, state figures showed.
The United States is the top buyer of oil from Venezuela, the world's No. 5 exporter. Citgo has 13,500 independently owned gas stations in the U.S.
I wouldn't call myself a fan of Larry's, but I don't mind him either. At least, he's good to the cops and very supportive of the memory of Danny Faulkner. He has been to many, many anti-Mumia rallies.
Wait a minute. I'm thinking we're talking about different Larrys. I'm talking about Larry Mendte. Are you talking about Larry Kane? Him, I couldn't stand.
You're right on target. I agree completely.
I like Larry Kane. I can't stand Larry Mendte. He's too dramatic and I feel that the entire broadcast journalism industry has taken a serious nosedive since he's been here. Yes, Kane takes stands I don't like. But he's not the entertainer that Mendte is. I just can't stand the man.
Larry Mendte's hair just freaks me out -- sculpted and sprayed into the wierdest Trump-esque helmet. That, and he's such a drama queen when he reads the news.
I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought that.
