Diane Rehm vigorously disputed on her radio program on Friday that George Bush had ever volunteered to serve in Viet Nam.
Rehm's guest, conservative journalist Fred Barnes, mentioned the familiar assertion that at one point during his Air Guard service, the President did volunteer to go to Viet Nam, an offer that was not accepted.
Rehm responded with incredulity saying that she had never heard such a claim. Some of her callers -- typically left wing -- joined in her scornful dismissal of any such notion. The matter was left with the agreement that Barnes would research the matter and call back into the show on Monday.
The Diane Rehm Show is produced by WAMU in Washington and is widely heard on public radio stations.
I searched The Weekly Standard site but could find no address for The Beatle. I sent the following to editor@weeklystandard.com:
=====================
As you probably know, Diane Rehm rather nastily called out Fred Barnes on her show Friday over Mr. Barnes reference to the President having volunteered for Viet Nam duty while with the Air Guard. Ms. Rehm, her voice filled with incredulous contempt for what she perceives as the fantasies of the far right, insisted that she had never even heard of such a thing. They both promised to revisit the question on the radio.
I am eager to follow this business to its conclusion but can not stomach a steady diet of Diane Rehm in order to do so.
Although I realize that Mr. Barnes' appearance on the program was "extracurricular" with resepct to TWS, I nonetheless thought you might find a spot on your website -- perhaps The Daily Standard of the blog -- to follow this matter.

Also sent a note to Rehm (drshow@wamu.org) making largely the same appeal. But, because I stifled myself and was slyly polite, I am too embarrassed to copy it here.
Thanks for the update. I was unable to find an email address for Fred as well.
Lefty's can't read. How would she know?
