Washington 's policy-makers have been careful in the war on terror to distinguish between Islam and the terrorists. The distinction has rankled conservatives who see scarce difference.

You are talking to the wrong person about Native American history. Your analogy holds water like Teddy's Oldsmobile. Regardless of whatever wrong the United States or our forefathers have done, we do not now invade other countries with the purpose of claiming that country as our own. Islam does that as a means of expanding the "religion" and islam kills those who do not submit. If you do not see that then there is nothing that I can do to help a deaf, dumb and blind person except to give you the advice that decapitation is less painful if you don't struggle. Although you may not need that advice if you are a muslim.

The Muslims armies did not murder people enmasse--generally--they simply invaded and established their government over them. It wasn't until the Middle ages that the majority of people in the Muslim states had become Muslims, since the Arab invaders exacted tribute from the non-Muslims. Probably the best way to eradicate the threat is what Ann Coulter suggested fasciously: convert them all to Christianity. De-Muslimize the region by suppressing the cults. If this sounds radical, it is no more than what most secular westerners expect. Islam is diametrically opposed to "modernization." because for them to accept it would have the same effect on Islam as what the Communists attempted.
