THIS is why people pushing for the billion dollar boondoggle of The Fence are going in the wrong direction.

Luckily, we have a President who knows that the fight must take place as far away as possible, and will not let himself get sidetracked.

Bush is too busy making sure his own Justice Department doesn't prosecute a single employer illegally hiring illegal alien workers. THAT's where a difference could be made overnight. No laws need to be passed- Bush just needs to call in his prosecutors and tell them to start enforcing the laws already on the books. Word would get around among employers VERY fast and demand for illegal labor would go way down.

Actually, you are 180* wrong in your immature one-inch-deep analysis.

The move toward tunnels proves that the fences in the San Diego region are working. The fences are forcing the drug cartels to spend millions to dig deep, because it's getting harder to move their loads above ground.

These elaborate tunnels are not used to move illegal aliens, that trade could never pay for such capital intensive efforts. Tunnels used to move illegals would be discovered quickly and shut down, before they could "pay" for themselves.

These tunnels are used to move large shipments of marijuana, cocaine and heroin. The Tijuana Cartel controls drug trafficking in that sector, and to stay in the game as major players, they have to dig deep, or go out of business. THis is because of the effectiveness of the modern fences facing them in that sector.

Here is a sample of the Duncan Hunter 15' fence. It exists in the areas of San Diego where the drug cartels are now forced to dig to stay in business. Where the fence exists, illegal alien traffic drops to zero.

The House has authorized building 700 miles of this fence in critical sections of the border.

Is this a different tunnel from the 1400 one posted yesterday?

Authorities unearth 1,200-yard tunnel into U.S.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Authorities have found what they call the largest tunnel running into the United States along the U.S.-Mexican border. About 2 tons of marijuana were inside the tunnel, the Drug Enforcement Administration said, indicating that it appears to have been used to transport drugs. DEA and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents discovered the tunnel Wednesday night. It runs from Tijuana, Mexico, to Otay Mesa, California. Officials said the tunnel is about seven-tenths of a mile (1,148 meters) or more than 1,200 yards long. Initial reports said it is 5 feet high and 3.5 feet wide.

I agree that the fence/wall/etc won't stop the tunneling being done for drugs.... That is a separate issue to the crossing of humans.... The drugs are profitable enough that they will find ways to get them in.

You're missing a couple of glaring points:

1. Increased enforcement made the digging of this fairly sophisticated tunnel necessary.

2. We found it.

That "fence" will be quite effective against this sort of thing if we do it properly and sink a steel-reinforced concrete wall 30 feet into the ground.

To supplement this we should treat the tunnels as enemy military installations and summarily execute anyone coming out of them.

How far? To where? The battle is in our streets, in our neighborhoods, and in our businesses. We don't have enforcement of our current laws or our borders. Obviously border patrol and border enforcement works or else they wouldn't be trying to hide their activities underground.

"“People are always going to find a way around us,” he said."

The right attitude is that we will always catch them, and make things harder for them next time. If American leaders throughout history had his attitude we wouldn't be here.

One word ... Ground Penetrating radar, OK that was three words, but I think everyone who actually cares about border security gets the idea.

>"U.S. agents had been investigating the possibility of an elaborate drug-smuggling tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego for more than a year, but couldn't find it despite using military equipment so advanced it's classified"

If they could smuggle drugs through the tunnel isn't there a tiny possibility that undesirable, criminal/terroristic elements might have been smuggled too?

Deport all the illegal aliens now and seal the mucking borders!!

Presidente Arbusto, the Chamber of Commerce traitors, and other illegal alien invasion deniers should be made to stay in that tunnel for 30 days with about 5,000 of their "they're just coming here to find honest work" buddies. If they find their way back to D.C. after their tunnel vacation, they can reconsider their policy options.

Tell me, RS-

Where is the *logic* in fighting an enemy across the ocean while simultaneously allowing that SAME enemy to stream unchecked into your home camp?

We have MS-13 and MS-18 running over us in S. Texas.

Pretty close to me, RS! And maybe bull headed...?

Troops, fence/wall, deportation and employer prison time now!

I want the fence built for the entire length of the border. There are WAY too many places where someone can walk right in. (such as Neely's crossing) One problem may be the large reservoirs on the Texas border. Maybe someone can figure a way to stop boats from coming across the lakes.

Agreed. Big fences will just lead to big ladders.

Stop alien employment.

Whatever! The illegals are bankrupting our schools and hospitals here in California. A fence would be a great way to slow it down.

I can't picture millions of illegals coming here through a tunnel... It would be obvious where they were coming from. I'm picturing an endless line of Mexicans crawling out of a tunnel in the middle of the desert. NO WAY!
