I didn't think journalists had ethics anymore.

AFAIK the legal name of the protected category is "hispanic surname" NOT "hispanic". that's the loophole.
this name changing business has been going on for some time. I remember a lawsuit 20 years or so ago on this topic - the guy who changed his name won because the category was SURNAME.

So I have a question. Does being Scottish qualify under affirmative action? Or is there a list of countries that Affirmative Action applies to as acceptable?

Or, maybe it's just the same phony artifice that is the underlying premise of affirmative action and political correctness? It's hard to make a shallow pool and criticize people for wading in it.

Is she another one of those reporters who speaks with perfect, accent-free, English until she gets to her name, which she pronounces with an exaggerated accent?
To: Nevadan
Where did she get the name?

I remember her when she was in San Antonio, but I did not know she had changed her name. Always liked her.

Get use to it...you have W to thank. Here in Dallas the highest rated TV station/News is Hispanic. If you watch the traditional stations NBC,CBS,ABC you will see a bug shift to Hispanic readers. I am also noticing more Spanish language commercials on English stations. Thanks W for destroying our beautiful America.

I remember this article from before. There is a newscaster out here who goes by the name 'Gordon Tokumatsu' whose real name is Gordon Gary. If I remember correctly, he decided to use his maternal grandmother's name to sound more ethnic. He does look vaguely Asian but not much. At the time, I was floored at the blatant hypocrisy of this type of manipulation. Apparently it is pretty common and treated out here with a wink and a nod.

What a fool I've been. To think how much farther I could have gone in life if I hadn't stuck with my own, non-protected-group, surname.
That does it. I'm calling a lawyer today to get my name changed to:
Shaquille Hirohito Crazy-Horse Nanook Fidel Tse-Tung
Now, I'm just an average white guy, but I consider myself to be part of the peoples reflected in that name. In sort of an existential sense, you know. A one-man Rainbow Coalition.

I'm sure most people could find that they're part Latino--or some other favored ethnic group--if they look far enough up the family tree.
