Before 9/11 I was able to bring a pen knife and nail clippers on board several flights.

the attendant told deputies she purchased the grenade at an Army surplus store as a present to bring home for her son.
Apparently NW does not hire flight attendants based on brains.

Apparently you do not have any brains.

What's illegal about a dummy grenade? (Assuming the story is correct and it was inert)...

Apparently you do not have any brains So is that supposed to mean that carrying a "real but inactive" hand grenade through a security checkpoint is a smart thing to do?
Or are you a sensitive airline stewardess?

What the hell is wrong with people like her? In a time when everyone is conscious of heightened airline security, this dope thinks it's ok to pack a hand grenade in her luggage! She should be sent to prison for her stupidity alone!

There really is no crime in owning or possessing an inert (training) grenade. It doesn't become a crime until you try to make it active again which is not a simple process.

Probably one of those dummies that they sell. I'm from Kentucky, and going to the army surplus store isn't considered all that weird in the south, although I imagine the more urban folk will find this bizarre.
At the least, anyone with half a brain ought to know that airline security isn't going to react to well to something like this. I don't know how a person could not realize that.

All an inert grenade is is the metal casing. The fuse, the explosives, everything is literally removed from it. It's nothing more than a metallic casing. If you look at the bottom of them you will note that the bottom has been sawed off so the explosive inside could be removed. That's why they were standing up unassisted in the pics. Live grenades aren't shaped in a way that they can be stood up.
It really is much ado about nothing. OTOH, you have to know that that stuff isn't going to go over too well with airline security. Just common sense and all.

and she is blond! An old math trick.
The odds against a bomb being on your flight are very high. The odds against two bombs from independent sources on your flight are astronomical. So be safe and bring your own bomb!

"...real but inactive..."
Sounds like me right about now. Seriously though, thems is some dumb verbiage.
