CNN: Wolf Blizer Reports - They have more then 60 votes for cloture - possibly 70
CNN

Wolf Blizer on "The Situation Room" reported that the republicans have more then enough votes for cloture, as many as 70. Looks like Kerry jumped the gun a bit too fast.

That's 59, I'm sure there is one more vote for cloture in there somewhere.

Salazar from CO has already said he will vote for Cloture even though he will vote no on Confirmation.

Frist should force a Cloture vote IMO.

It's a joint decision. I think the cloture vote has some negative ramifications for the DEMs, and DEM leadership may prefer to not conduct a cloture vote, upon a bit of reflection.

If the DEMs agree to an up or down vote, without an intervening cloture vote, Frist will take it, and I think that's the better move.

LOL He wanted a filibuster, but got a flipbuster instead.

I actually said I didn't want to filibuster, before I said I wanted to Filibuster.

This administration.....blah blah, blah.

Looks like Kerry jumped the gun a bit too fast.

Well, at least Kerry's consistency can be considered commendable. lol

"Kerry was just posturing for the Kossacks. He knew there'd be no filibuster; Reid had already said so."

Exactly - this is the kind of cheap political posturing that political whores love to do - costs Kerry nothing in time, effort, or political capital (as though he had any) and allows him to pander to his psychotic loony left friends at Kos, DU, etc.

Kerry is a fool, clearly. Instead of 'calling for fillibuster' just START ONE. A fillibuster consists of taking the floor and talking non-stop. HE'S GREAT AT THAT! He can yeild to the other true-believers who are following the NY Times marching orders. Go for it man!

He is a Coward of the First Order! He called for the filibuster and then got on a plane to Switzerland (no kidding).

Not so sure Hillary views kerry has competition. I don't think any of the Democrats do. IMO, it's a universal rejection of Kerry by the Democrats in the Senate. They want him to go away, shut up, and not remind America of why they shut the Dems out of power in 2004.

there were reports they were upset with him for butting in on the Reed presser a little while back as well.

That guy couldn't be more of stupid @ss.

He could, for he could have come from a "peanut" family instead of a tobacco family.

Correct. As I stated on another thread, the timing alone tells you what this is. He waited to call for the filibuster until he knew there were 60 votes for cloture. By calling for the filibuster he faces no risk, but can only gain. He appeals to the moonbats in the party that write the checks and that he'll need to wrest the nomination away from Hillary. Although it may hurt him a bit with general voters, the election is still 2 years away and it likely won't come back to haunt him. If Alito is not filibustered, he plays himself off as the hero who, unlike Senator Clinton, not only voted against Alito but had the courage of his convictions to call for the filibuster. If, in the unlikely event Alito was actually filibustered, he would become nearly divine to the DailyKos crowd.

Hillie's a greedy gut. She's not afraid of him winning anything, I think, just sucking up money and airtime.

You mean, Kerry waited till filibuster was NOT a possibility before he even brought it up. And he did it from Davos Switzerland....I mean, how's that for not being where the action is???? But Kerry's little filibuster bluff allows democrats to deceptively tell their base, "well, we tried "

What a great media stunt.

The base sends them money for the passionate (and meaningless) speeches, and then losing the cloture vote scares them into sending even more money.

All the obvious comments ahve been made except this one so I'll add it. :)

Before GWB became president, if you had 51 votes for a judge (or technically 50 with the VP to break the tie) that judge was in.

Now that number is all of a sudden 60 (or is it 61 - I guess it's probably 61).

What does that mean? Well, for one thing we might well be talking about Justice Janice Rogers Brown's first term on the court if it wasn't for this change in how our constitution operates.

So in all likliehood, we win because Alito gets confirmed.

But in some sense, we lose because the RATs succeeded in changing the constitution.

Once again, Kerry's unerring political instincts serve him well.

So why the long face, John?
