LA GLORIA Authorities are trying to determine the nationality of six people, five men and one woman, who died in a two-vehicle collision at about 6 a.m. today just south of La Gloria on U.S. 281.
Officials are trying to recreate the incident, but it appears the collision took place as a Ford pickup going east on Country Road 405 turned onto 281 and was struck by an 18-wheeler carrying automobiles and going southbound on 281 toward Falfurrias, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Ryan Rippee. The 2005 Ford F-150 pickup flipped on its side and landed in a ditch.
The 18-wheeler collided with the pickup possibly because of a downed stop sign at the intersection on to 281, Rippee said.
The 18-wheeler struck the pickup on the left rear side, and several people were ejected from the pickup. Two bodies were found in the pickup, which officials said was possibly a stolen vehicle, and the rest were spread across the scene, including under the 18-wheeler. The 18-wheeler will not be removed until authorities are sure all of the bodies have been found.
The 18-wheeler struck the pickup after trying to avoid a Ford Expedition traveling in front of the truck, officials said. The Expedition swerved into a wire fence near the ditch even though it wasnt involved in the accident, Rippee said.
Border Patrol officials said they believe the pickup and SUV were involved in human smuggling.
In addition to the six deaths, eight people were transported to both Christus Spohn Hospital Alice and Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial for treatment, some with serious injuries.
Except for the driver of the 18-wheeler, who did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, all of the dead and the injured were riding in the Ford pickup, authorities said. Authorities believe there were at least 14 people in the pickup.
Authorities are searching for individuals who fled from the Expedition on foot. Helicopters were being used in the search.
After interviewing some of the immigrants who were taken to the hospital, it still is unclear where the immigrants were picked up or where they were heading, DPS Sgt. Ricardo Palacios said. However, County Road 405 originates as CR 101 in Brooks County and becomes CR 405.
Assisting in the overall investigation are the Texas Department of Transportation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Texas Department of Public Safety, the Jim Wells County Sheriffs Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Authorities did not believe the driver of the 18-wheeler would receive a traffic citation. He is being interviewed at the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint.
Paging President Bush, Sec. Chertoff, Sen. Cornyn and Gov. Perry!
Wonder how much that is gonna cost us. We should all start holding everyone of these people as dependents on our taxes ea yr, just send the newspaper clippings in with our tax filing to prove it.
Wow..weird...when the story broke last night they said 11 family members killed..And Im thinkin...wow thats a big family..Guess today they let the real story squeek out when no ones looking.
One Halo Flight from Fal to Corpus is about $7,000.
How much inventory can you afford to lose before it becomes economically infeasible to continue your method of transport...?
Well at least two of us caught it. What should we do?
Now those evil SUVs are involved in human smuggling. Six people in a stolen pick up and LE can't figure out the nationality???
Oops, make that 14 in the pickup.
I think it's cash up front and the pickup and SUV were probably stolen.
Fal Ping!
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off this South Texas/Mexico ping list.
Is the American alright?
The ACLU will probably sue the truck driver who had full right-of-way when they hit him.
Arizona has also been getting in on the fun. Gilbert [AZ] Police Led On Wild Chase; 24 immigrants packed in truck
<< Wonder how much that is gonna cost us .... >>
My first thoughts, also.
That lasted only as long as it took me to scan down to where yet another unlawfully-combatant company of the Criminal Alien Invasion Army is referred to as "immigrants."
These criminal-alien invaders are not even any longer, merely "migrants" - and never were "immigrants." [An immigrant is an alien who has been legally processed into a country]
And, their disarming individual attractiveness notwithstanding, to Heck with euphamisms and political correctedness, the facts are that the millions of these folks [And their inconceivably many millions of "family" members] are collectively as dangerous to our nation's sovereignty, Rule of Law, culture, language and moral integrity as is al Qaeda.
Rather than be transported to local and city and municipal and district and state and feral hospitals, those wounded in this kind of engagement should be triaged by the military and transported by the military to military medical facilities within the nearest convenient secure military installation and, after first aid, be transported by military transport to Guantanamo for prior-to-deportation processing, sentencing and incarceration.
As aught be any and every member of any invading enemy army.
I know the costs of illegals well. We are one of the only counties left in California with a county hospital. Kern Medical Center services tons of illegals and we have tons of illegals here. Our Board of Supervisors just "loaned" KMC an additional $10 mil the other day, on top of the $50 mil they already gave them. This came straight out of our property tax monies.
Our gang problem here is horrible, we have less firefighters and policemen than we had 10 yrs ago while our population has just about doubled. Yet we keep chunking money down that black hole KMC.
Our politicians, from local on up, simply disgusts me anymore. They are giving our resources (tax monies) and country away.
Thank you Mr. "do nothing about the problem" President!
