Ireland: Report Recommends No Change to Traditional Family Definition

DUBLIN, Ireland, January 26, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) –Ireland will retain its definition of the family without including same-sex relationships, according to a report released yesterday by Ireland’s Prime Minister Bertie Ahern.

The ‘All Party Report on the Constitution’ recommends that a civil partnership system should be formed instead. The system would accommodate cohabiting and same-sex couples, leaving the original definition of ‘family,’ based on marriage, intact.

Under the civil partnership system, there would be two forms of union. A civil registered partnership would apply to both heterosexual and homosexual couples, while a ‘presumptive civil partnership’ would apply only to heterosexual couples that had lived together for an extended period of time and presumably had formed a partnership agreement.

The system would limit same-sex couples to registered partnerships, since it would not be possible to assume two men or women living together were homosexual.

Couples under civil partnerships would have some recognized rights under law, but the rights would be limited, and not equivalent to marriage.

The report did not address the question of whether or not homosexual couples would be allowed to adopt children.

There has been a recent push in the European Union to give homosexual couples legal recognition. Spain, Belgium and Holland have legalized gay marriage—many other states in the EU have legal civil unions for homosexual couples.

Didn't the EU recently threaten to throw out any country that did not embrace homosexual marriage?

They did. I would love for Ireland to be evicted from the EU, one of the fastest growing European economies in a sea of dead wood.

Being Irish it always cracks me up when I hear a leftist moaning about Bush and saying they're going to move to a liberal country like, let's say, Ireland.

I point out that divorce is almost impossible to get in Ireland, and was only legalized about 10 years ago. Abortion in NOT legal in Ireland and good luck finding Playboy over there. Believe me.

I never quite understood why any nation would want to be a member of the EU in the first place.

"The system would limit same-sex couples to registered partnerships, since it would not be possible to assume two men or women living together were homosexual."

But of course it is possible; no less than the APA states that sexual orientation is not determined by sexual behavior.

Scary thought.

They are certainly putting a lot of pressure on us to liberalize gay marriage. The reason gay marriage was rejected is because the Taoiseach (prime minister) said that a referendum on gay marriage would never pass, which is wholly correct.

Thankfully, the EU constitution was rejected, otherwise EU law would supersede all Irish law and then there would be no question of legalizing gay marriage. Anyway, the EU is now trying to introduce the important bits of their wretched constitution without the inconvenience of a democratic mandate.

I stand corrected. I took Ireland's stand against the EU Constitution as meaning it was not going to join.
