Prime minister-designate Stephen Harper is suggesting Canada will not recognize the new Palestinian Hamas government.
Harper, who is to be sworn in Feb. 6, suggested today that his Conservative government won't accept Hamas as long as it continues to support terrorism and call for the destruction of Israel. Asked about the issue during his first news conference since winning Monday's election, Harper said he supports Israel.
And he added: "For a nation to be truly democratic, that nation must renounce terrorism."
Hamas is already banned from operating in Canada because of its support for terrorism.
The group won a surprise majority in this week's Palestinian election.
U.S. President George W. Bush says the United States will not deal with Palestinian leaders who dispute Israel's right to exist
I like him already. Excellent statement with no wiggle room.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
Gutsy. I like it
Outstanding. What a difference an election can make.
Canada, long a bit player notable principally for its peevish hostility toward U.S. interests, is about to acquite a sensible government.
Agreed.
Finally I see someone to believe in reference Canadian politicians.
he has...well you know...guts!!! but not really what i mean. lol wow, what a switch already!!!
I'm betting this means the UN will put Hamas on their "security" council.
For a nation to be truly democratic, that nation must renounce terrorism
--Already good things from this guy. Like him already!
Thank you, Canadians. It's already getting better. I love it when we're on the same team.
Thank You! yes!!! FINALLY!!!
I guess Canada is a bit different from most other parliamentary systems, eh? Usually, when a party doesn't have a majority, they have to broker deals with other parties and offer cabinet spots to those parties as well. I guess that isn't the case with Canada...
I've been having warm cuddly feelings in my stomach all week since the election. I just had another one. WOW!!!

Conservative Canadians ahead of the US on this issue.
Well, there is an election to take place. And we have a policy that comes from a reality of what Hamas is and Hamas has done. The election will take place. It is going to be a Palestinian election with the Palestinians setting the rules for how that election takes place. And we'll respect that.
Condi Rice
No they don't. When putting forth proposed policies, however, they need agreement within the House. So they only have to form mini coalitions on an issue by issue basis.
Good first step for the new Canadian regime.
Now let's see if they'll send a few people to Iraq to help out in the coalition effort against terrorism there.
Ahhh...refreshing.
It would seem that he'll have the most power/leeway when it comes to foreign policy.
