Bush says ready to use veto if Congress overspends

President George W. Bush, who has never vetoed legislation, said on Thursday he was ready to do so this year if the U.S. Congress approves too much government spending.

"I'm fully prepared to use the veto if they overspend," Bush told a news conference.

Speaking as it was announced that the U.S. budget deficit would hit $337 billion this year, Bush also said he would welcome legislation to discourage the use of "earmarks," or targeted spending that lawmakers often use for pet projects in their districts. Such measures are often added in secret to spending bills.

Bush touted a five-year bill to cut spending on social welfare and other programs by $39.7 billion. The measure was approved by the U.S. Senate but still needs final passage in the House of Representatives.

Approval by the House of that bill would show a resolve for fiscal discipline, Bush said.

Jorge Arbusto has signed spending bills that would shock even the most alcoholically enhanced of mariners. I will believe it when I see it.

Actually Republicans were paid to vote for the highway bill. If I remember correctly it was $15 mil per district for a yes vote. What a joke George!

Abramoff is a piker compared to our politicians.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Stop it! Best laugh I've had in some time.

Why doesn't he contact Governor Janet Napoleon for instructions in how to use one's veto pen.

I'm fully prepared to use the veto if they overspend," Bush told a news conference.

A threat that rings hollow from a president who has never cared about overspending before and has never vetoed a bill before.

I'm fully prepared to use the veto if they overspend," Bush told a news conference Better use it at least once Mr President. Otherwise you go down in history as the only wimp in the White House who never vetoed anything.

As to "earmarks", give each representative a allocation (say $10 million for reps and $20 for senators, with extras for leadership and committee heads) that they can spend on their district or combine with others for their state. This would at least limit it.

Hell, No! That would only legitimize it. This is the most corrupt practice politicians engage in, and it's devastating to our political system. We need to declare war on it like there's no tomorrow.
