Bush says ready to use veto if Congress overspends

President George W. Bush, who has never vetoed legislation, said on Thursday he was ready to do so this year if the U.S. Congress approves too much government spending.

"I'm fully prepared to use the veto if they overspend," Bush told a news conference.

Speaking as it was announced that the U.S. budget deficit would hit $337 billion this year, Bush also said he would welcome legislation to discourage the use of "earmarks," or targeted spending that lawmakers often use for pet projects in their districts. Such measures are often added in secret to spending bills.

Bush touted a five-year bill to cut spending on social welfare and other programs by $39.7 billion. The measure was approved by the U.S. Senate but still needs final passage in the House of Representatives.

Approval by the House of that bill would show a resolve for fiscal discipline, Bush said.

Has to be. When measured in real dollars, he hasn't hit the spending of FDR yet has he? Isn't he going for some sort of record on wasteful spending?

Saw the President make this comment today. At first I thought he was making a joke. No joke. Sorry to say, I wasn't impressed.

In the last five years Bush, with support from his cohorts in GOP Congress, has expanded government like no one since LBJ. Bush signed into law a trilion dollar prescription drug program. Bush doubled the budget for the Dept of Education. Bush signed off on a huge transportation bill with thousands of earmarks, a pork laden farm bill and energy bill. The Feds spend more today on social welfare and entitlements then ever before. In 2005 there was more waste, fraud and abuse in the federal budget then ever before. Over 15,000 earmarks for pork barrel spending.

When it comes to spending the taxpayers money, Bush and the GOP stand for big government Republicanism.

I'll believe it when I see it. And then I'll ask the obvious question: Why now? The damage is already done.

Talk is cheap, Mr. President Jr. You also said you wouldn't support the assault on our First Amendment.

Should we be reading his lips?

Anything beyond national defense, police and courts is highly suspect.

The main veto pen was stolen by Clinton along with all the W keys from the computers.

The strategic reserve veto pen is hidden along with Vice President Cheney at an undisclosed location.

I will believe it when I see it.

As to "earmarks", give each representative a allocation (say $10 million for reps and $20 for senators, with extras for leadership and committee heads) that they can spend on their district or combine with others for their state.

This would at least limit it.
